Donnie Allison's Hawaiian Tropic Chevelle Laguna
Donnie Allison's Hawaiian Tropic Laguna from the 1977 season. Saw this car in action several times when Donnie drove for Hoss Ellington. One beautiful race car. Donnie was always competitive in this car. My model depicts Donnie's car as it was raced in the 1977 Winston 500.
I always loved the look of the Laguna and is still one of my favorite body styles ever raced in Winston Cup.
KIT: MPC Pepsi Chevelle Re-issue
PAINT: Tamiya TS-8 Italian Red over Tamiya Fine Gray Primer. Chassis painted with Tamiya XF-1 Flat Black and clear-coated using Model Master Semi-Gloss Clear. All metal parts painted with Model Master Metalizers. I clear-coated the chrome wheels using highly thinned Tamiya Clear Smoke to knock off some of the brightness of the chrome to give them that raced look.
DECALS: Powerslide from Mike's.
BUILD NOTES: Used an AMT early-90s (Pontiac) chassis/roll cage/suspension modified to fit MPC body. Scratch-built some of the other details including the window net, radiator shroud, fuel nozzle, and dash.
THE REAL THING:

Photographed with my Darrell Waltrip Laguna build from a few years ago when the re-issue was first released. I have a few more of these Laguna kits I plan to build in the future:

SIDE STORY AND INSPIRATION FOR THE BUILD:
I took my then-gorgeous and smoking-hot girlfriend and who is now my still gorgeous and smoking-hot wife to the 1977 Winston 500. It was her first ever Winston Cup race. The last lap became a four car shootout involving Donnie, Darrell Waltrip, Benny Parsons, and Cale Yarborough. She was so excited (as well as the almost 100,000 fans) on the last lap that she grabbed me by arm and almost squeezed it off. I had fingernail marks afterwards. The crowd was screaming so loudly that they almost drowned out the roar of the race cars. No one was sitting. It was one of the most memorable Talladega finishes of all the ones I attended. Great memories. Here is a short 1:30 minute youtube video of that finish:

Thanks for looking! Comments and questions always welcomed.

Man O man Bobby, you just keep on raising the bar. That's a beautiful build. I always liked Hoss Ellingtons cars. And thanks for the attached video, it was great. _________________ life is hard, it's harder when you're stupid. John Wayne |

Thanks guys! I haven't posted in a while. Seem to have gotten lazy! I've built a lot in the couple of years so I guess I need to post some of them.

Great looking model! I've always been a fan of the Hoss Ellington cars no matter the driver. _________________ "Many men fish all their lives without knowing it is not the fish they are after." Henry David Thoreau
