|
|
The Jax Speedway dirt track opened in 1947. By 1960 David Ezell
had raced every year at the track and did until it closed
sometime in the 1980's.
1960 was kind of a transition year. The heavy NASCAR
type full bodied modified/sportsman cars (1936 to 1940) gave
way to the older 1929 to 1934 but lighter sheet metal.
What would eventually be referred to as "skeeters" but we never
called them by that name.
the 409 chevy truck engine was popular but this was unusual
for Ezell, who normally ran Ford engines. The tall skinny
truck type tires gave way to the grooved wider true racing
tires. But still used the smaller tire on the left front.
Model uses BigDonkey resin body and tires. Frame, running
gear and whitewalls are from the REVELL 32 Ford coupe
kit. Plus a lot of hand made odds and ends.
Wings were allowed on occasion, but did this without the
wing...

Love it! I haven't gone into this subject for building - but Big Donkey's got some tempting wares. _________________ Bill Jobson is my real name. |

Check out the Webb site. Has all types of dirt and pavement tires plus rims.
I usually just try and match up the old photos to what’s available and can get fairly close most of the time.
The rear tires on the #6
Are DT-6...Have to be painted then add the whitewall. |

Thanks for the tire info....have several sets of his tires and wheels, greared twoards the old AMT Grant King sprints, some of which are the DT-6 tires, as well as replacements for bilds completed back in the '70's, namely 3 old Lindberg modifieds/supermodiieds, but have never gotten around to prepping and panting them... _________________ Ed. A very cool modified Hawk. They were never called "SKEETERS" here on the west either. They were referred to as 'HARDTOPS'. My Uncle drove them from 1945-55 at Shasta Speedway. Then it was Dirt and shared with the Horses. It was a Fairgrounds Track and still is today. But....they put asphalt on it and I think ruined it. It's a single groove 3/10 track now. _________________ Short Track racing....Ya gotta love it.

Cars were built as Identical as possible with the
Chevy W head engines & MODEL A bodies. |
