Kyle Petty's 1996 Coor's Light "Protest" Grand Prix

Here's a special one for you Kyle Petty fans (or Felix Sabates owner of the #42). This is the car painted up to look like a certain black chevrolet the week following the Coca-Cola 600 after Kyle was penalized 7 laps ( 5 for "rough driving" and 2 for "rough talking") after an accident on a restart at lap 156 involving Ted Musgrave and 11 others! Felix maintained that if that certain black chevrolet had been involved there would have been no penalty given! So there you have the story behind the car, behind this model!

This is a 1997 Monogram Pontiac kit with a set of so-called bootleg decals (because of the beer sponsorship of the car). As with all of these new Pontiac kits and also the new Monte Carlo kits as well there is no need for any modifications to the body at all and since it is a 1996 car there is no Earnhardt bar!

Painting and Decals:

The chassis and body interior are standard light grey the body exterior is painted all black. The decals were not the absolute best I've ever seen there was some misalignment of the yellow triangles on the cat logos and some of the contingency decals that had yellow in them also and the red outline stripe on the lettering and numbers was just a hair off! But this is still a good sheet!( and as far as I know there is no other sheet available for this car!). Note: This sheet is available at BSR in the B decals section of their on-line catalog) I painted the body and then applied the decals, lower silver body bands first then the rest of the decals and the contingency decals which overlap the silver bands! Once again I needed setting and softening solution on the front and rear portions of the silver bands to make them lay down and conform to the corners of the body! Once the decals were all on and set(dry) I then applied a coat of gloss enamel (testors high-gloss enamel spray). I then waited until the gloss was throughly dry (at least 2-3 days) and installed the windshield and clear parts ...which I had masked and painted in the interim... and this is what I got! Another beautiful model!
