I ran across this picture of the rear underside of Richards '68 Firecracker car and wondered how long Nascar let this degree of "massaging" go on?

Well, the caption makes it all clear.

Those underbody panels are all about generating shade for the drivers to cool off in. What a progressive era.

I think 1968 was the end of it on each side of the fuel cell.

The K&K Daytona in the Museum has a fairing from the cell to the rear valance. So does the Baker show car and the Fake 88 - which was made from the 1968 K&K 2x2 car that was banned by Nascar.

Oddly enough, DC-93, the real #88, ran over 200 with one 4 bbl. carb and without any added fairings behind the axle.

Something to be said for solid engineering...
