DK: In sports, preparation is key. 10 months of blood, sweat, and tears. 10 months of preparation, fine tuning, busted knuckles, and late nights all lead up to 7 weeks in March and April. Today, the 9 drivers of the 2023 Fantasy Cup Series season along with their crews will enter the fight to make it all worth the dedication in the off season. Hello again, I'm Dave Knight and welcome to the Hog City Speedway in Lexington, NC for the Food Lion 200. Joining me as always is 3-time NASCAR champion and hall of famer, Darrell Waltrip. DW, what can we expect at this newer 1/8 of a mile facility.

DW: Well, Dave, this place was established in 2020 so the asphalt's been broken in by weekly series for a couple years. It's short, narrow, and basically a bull ring where you have to bide your time and strike when an opening appears.

DK: Well, we're about to go racing in the BBQ capitol of the world so let's go trackside for the opening ceremony.

Ladies and gentlemen, please rise and remove your hats for the singing of our national anthem.

And now, race fans, it's time for the most famous words in motorsports. Please welcome our grand marshal, North Carolina native and 3-time NCAA basketball championship winning coach for the UNC Tarheels, Roy Williams.

RW: Ladies and gentlemen, start your engines!

DK: And now the starting lineup for the 2023 Fantasy Cup Series.

DK: On the pole, the first time winner in Phoenix last year, "Wild Bill" Godlewski back in the 72 WPLK FM 88/Blurtz Beer Chevy this year.

DK: Starting 2nd is Ken Wallace in the number 26 Hobgoblin IPA Chevy for the Brewdog Motorsports family.

DK: The 3rd place starter is the number 3 Holly Farms Buick of Amy "Hollywood" Hilton for Razorback Motorsports.

DK: 4th place is Linda Lou Godlewski in the 56 Equest Center Buick.

DK: Starting 5th is the patriarch of the Wallace racing dynasty is the 2020 series champ Keith Wallace in the number 23 Wallace Brewing Ford.

DK: Alongside in 6th is the 04 Uno Chevrolet piloted by veteran Lee "Spud" Loggins.

DK: The 7th place qualifier is dirt specialist Sheldon Hatterfield in the number 17 NOS Energy Ford.

DK: 8th place is the other half of the BBQ chicken brigade, JR "Razorback" Sealey in the 46 Bull's-Eye BBQ Sauce Pontiac.

DK: And shotgun on the field is the 2-time and defending series champion, the number 11 Eight & Sand Ford of Tim "T" Wallace.

Green Flag

DW: Boogity boogity boogity! Let's go racin' in 2023!

DK: Wild Bill got a nice launch off the green flag and hammers out of turn 2 with about a car length advantage over Hilton in the Buick.

DW: The outside lane got held up too so Ken Wallace and everyone behind him are having to get their feet back under them.

DK: Meanwhile at the line it's Bill Godlewski leading the opening lap here in Lexington.

Lap 43

DW: The champ Tim Wallace has been powering his way up through the field since the start. It's hard to pass here but he's picked off 3 spots in just the last 15 laps.

DK: He had a plug wire come loose in qualifying and had a slow lap but his powerhouse seems to be firing alright now.

Lap 70

DK: Linda Lou Godlewski is doing a tremendous job working the inside of turns 3 and 4. She's gotten a nose up under Amy Hilton and draws alongside her at the line.

DW: Hollywood got it that lap but Linda's got the inside in 1. She's gonna hang her out to dry to pick up 3rd. Meanwhile ol' Spud's been sizing Wild Bill up for the last few laps.

Lap 102

DW: Sheldon Hatterfield has just made a huge move on the outside and muscled his way past Hilton and Linda Lou. He gets in the fence a bit but gathers it up for 3rd.

Lap 139

DK: And we've got a problem on the back stretch. A car is slow on the outside, it's Amy Hilton with smoke pouring out of the exhaust. The engine has apparently expired and that will bring out the first caution.

Lap 176

DW: Linda just lost 4th to Tim Wallace. He's stayed consistant all race and finally manages to take the position.

White Flag

DK: The white flag is out! Look at Hatterfield on the inside going 3 wide with Bill Godlewski and Lee Loggins!

DW: That's not gonna last too long. Hatterfield gets loose, Wild Bill gets squeezed, and he's sideways!

DK: He'll collect Loggins on the outside in turn 2! They'll get tied up in the wall, Hatterfield gathers it up, and he'll lead Tim Wallace through turns 3 and 4. Sheldon Hatterfield takes the checkered flag in the Food Lion 200!

DW: Dave, I knew we were gonna see some beatin' and bangin' before it was all said and done!

DK: And it seemed inevitible at this 1/8 of a mile bullpen. 3-wide action resulting in a last lap pass. Sheldon Hatterfield led the lap that pays the most. Here's a look at the results for today's event.

1. 17 - Sheldon Hatterfield
2. 11 - Tim Wallace
3. 56 - Linda Lou Godlewski
4. 23 - Keith Wallace
5. 26 - Ken Wallace
6. 46 - JR Sealey
7. 72 - Bill Godlewski
8. 04 - Lee Loggins
9. 3 - Amy Hilton (Out)

DK: Godlewski and Loggins both managed to limp back to the checkered flag but the damage had already been done. Sheldon Hatterfield picks up his first win in the Fantasy Cup Series as well as the points lead. For Darrell Waltrip, I'm Dave Knight. Thank you for joining us and we'll see you in Illinois next week for the Quaker State 125.

VICTORY!!!!

Hatterfield thanks his crew, owners and fans as he finally breaks through into Victory Lane. After his rookie season he almost hung it up and went back to full-time dirt racing, but after some encouragement from his family and team he stuck with it.

He’s glad to be back on the dirt next go-round at such an iconic place as the IL State Fairgrounds.
