I got the Pond kit the other day. Plastic wise it is the same as the Model King reissue we did years ago. The old AMT 74 Chevelle/Malibu. BUT.....for some reason R2 removed the Laguna nose from the kit. It has been included since the 70's but gone now. ODD
The decals are all new. Not bad but the gold is more brown than gold. And the roof number is only included on the brown roof decal and not seperate like door numbers.....so no real option to paint your own gold areas.......you must use the brown side decals or source a roof number. Thanks |

HPI Guy has posted a build on his Youtube channel:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lLQnQhT5OA0
He's done as good a build as you can do on it right out of the box.
The biggest thing that bothers me about the body casting is the oversized front wheel openings - It looks like it sits too high, the wheel looks lost in that huge wheel well. Either you need to get the nose stance to sit lower for more rake, or do surgery to shrink the opening, using sheet styrene, I guess? Maybe some of both.
I seem to recall that the front wheel well is an old problem that goes back to the original AMT tooling - Was it shared between the Monte Carlo and the Malibu? I think it's been discussed here before. |

The basic body is unchanged since AMT tooled the 73 Chevelle body to fit the Monte Carlo chassis and interior. Best fix for the wheel well opening is to cut the opening at 12:00 (top center and behind the wheel arch and move the back half forward.
HPI guy had placed the filler part on TOP of radiator core support and not in front of it. He ended up just taking in off. The front needs lowering too....I toss the front metal axle and mount the front wheels to the chassis. A shelf model fix.
The kit is no contest winner. But with work it builds a decent shelf model.
