An absolute giant of motor car racing. An equally determined and brilliant man, he started with nothing but his will and a love of car racing and built one of the world's most formidable race teams.
Won two world drivers titles and two constructors titles before losing the use of his legs and much of his arms and hands in a terrible car crash in France in 1986.
Confined to a wheelchair, he went on to win five more drivers titles and seven more constructors titles in the following 13 seasons.
With the triumphs came great sorrow. His friend, Piers Courage, died in a fiery crash early in his career. After leaving McLaren for the team that most impressed him, the indomitable Ayrton Senna died at Imola driving a Williams car.
