I purchased a sprint car kit to build with after market decals. My problem is the actual car has Hoosier tires while the kit has molded Good Year. Can I sand the raised Good Year off the tires, cover the tires with clear gloss, and then put on the Hoosier decals? If this wouldn't work, any suggestions? Thanks for any help this board can provide. |

That would work. There are also certain Steve Kinser kits (the Bass Pro and a version of the last Quaker State) that have blank tires with no raised sidewall lettering. Or the newer Saldana Indy Race Parts #71 kits have pre lettered Hoosier tires in the kit. So you have options. _________________ ON DECK/IN THE WORKS: too many started to list...

Yes, I have done that on a few of my builds. Actually I had to do it even when the tires were the same make, because decals look better then raised letters that are painted. Just make sure after you put the decals on, that you finish them with a clear dullcote to seal them, and also makes the tires look more real . Glossy tires on a race car just looks a little funny. |

If you are doing an old school sprint and want to be accurate, you wouldn’t be able to use the tires from the Saldana kit. They have two Hoosier markings on each side, and the 1980s Hoosiers only have one per side. _________________ ON DECK/IN THE WORKS: too many started to list...

My method for tire decals
Cut off raised letters
with inside wheel installed, put on drill and with a fingernail file rotate and sand the sidewall and tread to smooth finish
glosscote sidewall ( I use Testors Glosscote and Dullcote airbrushed)
apply decals
glosscote again
Dullcote to finish |
