Late this afternoon, my wife, mother, her boyfriend, and I were on I-64 westbound in St Louis when there was an accident scene in the eastbound lanes that had traffic backed up for, literally, MILES.
Found out at dinner that the accident had a fatality... Bob Plager. Mr Hip Check himself. Heart and soul of my St. Louis Blues for the last, oh, 50 years or so.
Needless to say, I’m a little more than sad. I’m heartbroken... for his family, his Blues alumni family, and all his fans. Thankfully he got to see the Blues win a Stanley Cup before he passed.
Rest in peace, Bob... “#5 in your program, but #1 in your hearts...”

As a fan of hockey since the late 60's I can understand your sadness of a local hero. I don't remember Bob Plager but NHL hockey wasn't always readily available on tv here so wasn't familiar with every player.
We just lost a great center from the old WHL; Art Jones, so I can relate to your loss. |

I saw Bob Plager and his brothers play many times against the NY Rangers at MSG. Terrible loss. _________________ Forum member since 10/25/2010 |

Sad to read this news. Part of a legendary trio of brothers that played with distinction for the Blues and other clubs. As kids playing street or pond hockey, we'd take on imaginary identities of NHL players and try to play their style. If we wanted to rough it up a bit, we'd claim to be one of the Plager brothers. When Barclay, Bob and Bill Plager were all claimed, we'd invent a fourth brother, Biff.
Great to see Bob share in the Blues Stanley Cup celebrations and parade a couple of seasons back.
They were all part of a group of equally legendary NHL players from the northern Ontario mining town of Kirkland Lake, including Ralph Backstrom, Dick Duff, the 3 Hillman brothers, Mickey and Dick Redmond, Bob Murdoch and star goalies Bill Durnan and Darren Puppa. |
