I'm attempting to turn an older Thunderbird Monogram NASCAR kit into a close approximation of a local late model. I've slab sided the car and for the most part I'm satisfied with the exception of the roof. It needs to be chopped and lowered a bit. Anyone done this or know of a tutorial? This is one of those "I wonder if I can make this work" projects. All advice/suggestions appreciated. Here is the car I'm looking to build.

That is going to be difficult Dennis. Doable but difficult. I studied chopping the roof on my Clifford Allison Buick but there are so many angles and the cuts have to be almost perfect. I gave up and just left the roof alone. Wish I could help but this kind of mod is way above my skill level. Wish you luck and maybe someone can help.

Why not use one of the Revell ASA TBird bodies instead? To my eyes, that body is virtually identical to the one in your picture.

Agreed the ASA TBIRD is a better choice but I had the kit so I decided to try and take a whack at it. As much an experiment as anything. Thanks for the replies.

Dennis, looking at your attached image, I wonder if you might be able to avoid the top chop and simply enlarge the wheel and window openings? I would cut a larger radius into all four wheel openings, and lower the window sills and increase the size (downward) of the quarter windows. That would get you close to the image's look, and reduce the heaviness of the Monogram Cup body.

That said, if you still decide to chop the roof, I would chop it towards the top ot the A pillars, at the very top of the B pillars, and the C pillars at the bottom (extended from the front trunk lid line). That should allow you to preserve that curve at the base of the back window, while "sliding" the roof forward to make up for the gap that will be a byproduct of the lowering.
