The MPC Donnie Allison Cyclone was the first of MPC's NASCAR series that I built, back when first released in the '70s. I have always wanted to re-do it with better accuracy, particularly regarding the body. I will be doing an early Pearson version, late '72 season.
After much studying of reference photos, I have so far done the following modifications:

Adjusting the wheel openings. The Woods hung the body shifted back a bit, so the extra cuts are forward of center. Visual clue is the scalloped contouring around the openings. The rear edging of each opening is virtually stock, while the forward edge is cut completely away. The front wheel openings are opened higher up as well. I will follow up with a bit of flaring and also replicate the pulled-out lower fender behind the bumper. And of course the fuel filler needs to be relocated.

I picked up a resin grille/bumper/hood kit a while back, which replicates the correct Montego parts used by the Woods. I'll continue cleaning up the parts, which so far has included sanding down the bumper edges to nearly flush with the fenders, and I am toning down the center ridge on the hood, which was cast a bit strong. The best part of the resin kit is that the grille is accurately dimensional, and will show through nicely when covered with fine mesh.

Pretty sure it was DENCON Resins (Matt Conte?) - about 10 years ago...not sure if it's still produced.

Hey Adam, maybe that's a new product idea for you? Wink

Terry Barton did the Merc grill/bumper and a great job at that.

It was indeed Terry Barton that did the grille and hood. I still have mine in the box it came in with Terry's address and note.
So far Firefly is spot on with his mods. Should be a great follow along.

Thanks for clarifying that! I also have the '69 W-nose conversion. Maybe I got the two creators mixed up.

I cut the rear panel completely out. Will be replacing with a flat styrene piece.

The Woods puffed out the front fenders ahead of the wheel, so I am building them out with putty, Just a touch of bulge above the wheel arch as well.

From this angle you can see at the front edge of the front wheel opening, how far out the fender is puffed. I'll need to taper that inner edge down.

I relocated the fuel filler, and took out the taillight panel, replacing it with flat styrene cut to shape. I also cemented the roll pan at this point - I don't want to be fiddling with that at the end.

Guys, I’ve got an unused grille and hood conversion like the one pictured here, if somebody can cast copies I’d be willing to make it available if anyone is interested! p.m. me
