I was wondering if the original door numbers on the Smokey Yunick 1966 Chevelle were the foil style or just gold painted.
Thanks,

I'd kind of like to know this one too. I've seen photos of models and full size cars, some with foil #'s, some with gold paint matching the rest of the car. _________________ "Dude, it's not Camelot... it's only a model." "Details man, I need details!!" |

Not sure about the foil on Smokey's Chevelle but some of his earlier cars used gold leaf for the numbers on the doors. Gold leaf is applied in small bits and has a unique look to it. In the early years many Indy cars used gold leaf numbers and lettering, some of it was carefully "engine turned" using something like a ball of cotton.
It was also used in many cities fire apparatus for logos and lettering.
I don't think there was any foil sheeting available for numbering cars before 1967. So any foil look numbers or lettering before 1967 was likely gold leaf. Lots of cars have turned up with gold foil numbers in more recent years and they are either replicas or inaccurate restorations. Smokey's 62 Pontiac comes to mind, it never ran with foil numbers in real life. |

I found some color pictures of the yunick 66 chevelle and the numbers on the doors were definitley not foil like say the wood brothers used . I think however that the Emanuel Zervakis 61 chevy did have foil numbers . At least on the doors. Unless they were some kind of hybrid gold leaf. |
