So I’m starting a new project, Bill Elliott’s ‘85 T-Bird and was wondering if y’all assemble the roll cage before painting? I’ve always painted first then sanded the contact points.
What say you?
Thanks |

I like to assemble the roll cage using the chassis as a jig, but not glue it to the chassis. After the glue is dry, and I clean up all the mold lines, seams, I paint it as a unit.

Exactly what kurth said.
Another advantage of having it pre-fabbed is that often the cage doesn't quite go all the way to the roof and shows a gap at the top. This is easier to address (usually by slipping small pieces of styrene tube on the bottom of the four legs) when the cage is intact, but unpainted.

I've done it both ways and never used a jig, but Ilike the idea. Luckily I've not ran into any issues so far.
Can I see what you guys use for a chassis jig? _________________ I bleed Ford blue! |

I believe they're using the actual chassis from the car kit they're building.
The initial response from Kurth seems to have dropped the word 'as', as in "...using the chassis 'AS' a jig... . |

Build it first. Basically the whole interior except for the dash and seat and then paint with a brush. Surprising how a brush will get every where you need it to after the cage is installed. If i prefabbed the cage and then painted it, it would never fit correctly in the tub. If you look at my wips, you'll see what i'm talking about. Its close to the bottom of the first page in the wip below.
