Hey everyone.
I hope that this will be my "build thread" for the 1987 Kyle Petty car that he won the Coca Cola 600 in. I'm hopeful that I can make fairly regular progress on this.
At this point I'm still gathering parts. So far I have a sheet of Slixx decals and I bought a 1987 Mark Martin T-bird diecast on ebay as the donor car.
I'm researching old photos, youtube videos, and such to try to get the exact arrangement of contingency decals. I didn't realize that they varied so much from race to race, but the version on the Slixx set isn't exactly the same. I bought a set of JNJ individual contingency decals that contain most of the ones I'll need.
I still need to get some clearcoat spray for the Slixx decals since they're fairly old.
I also need to buy the correct blue & white paint. Does anybody have any advice on the correct color of blue I'll need?
Hope this pic shows up correctly. Just getting started......

can't help you other than I hate using brake fluid but... since it's diecast. It won't hurt anything. |

I have a Monogram Tbird kit that would work if you don’t want to go through all the trouble of stripping the diecast. Shoot me a PM if you are interested. _________________ ON DECK/IN THE WORKS: too many started to list...

Thanks for the offer but I'm shooting for a metal body diecast for this one. Mainly so it matches all the others in my Wood Brothers collection.
I do admit, I hate to destroy a Mark Martin diecast though, but it must be done.... |

Disassembled and stripped the donor car today.
I have the Microscale decal film, micro sol and micro set on hand.
I ordered the paint from MCW Automotive Finishes.
Hopefully some interesting progress coming up soon....

Sprayed a little paint today. MCW gray primer then gloss white.
How long should I wait before masking for the blue?

I would have gone with white primer. That white looks a little gray. Or it might just be the lighting of the shot you took. It might look just fine out in the sun light. Or maybe i'm color blind. |

No, its not just you. I thought it was just lighting too early on but it really is a little gray. I'm gonna put on some more coats of white today and see if it brightens up.
MCW only listed light gray and red oxide for primers so I went with the gray.
Hopefully it'll look better with a few more coats. |

Put it next to the Neil Bonnett version for comparison.

Finally finished up this project!
Not perfect for sure but I'm happy with it. I modified the contingency decals to match those from the Coke 600. Zero trouble with the vintage Slixx decals. I didn't clear them or anything. Also, I don't recommend the JNJ contingency decals. I bought a set of those and they were yellow, really tough to get them to slide, and the little Edelbrock decals fell off about an hour after I put them on. I ended up trimming out the contingency decals from the Slixx set plus another set of JNJ decals of a Michael Waltrip 1987 car (those were great).
Bottom pic includes a Bonnett and Blaney versions that I bought for comparison.
Anyway, thanks again to everyone here who helped me along the way!

Fits right in with the set! The red pinstripe around the hood seems to have fit pretty well. _________________ Bill Jobson is my real name. |

Thanks! Yeah, I was pretty nervous about that one but it ended up pretty good. I cut it into three pieces to make it easier to handle. |

Thanks! I'm just glad that the one I built seems to be worthy of parking beside the others. |
