Namely the July 1972 issue of Model Car Science mag....
Article was on "Detailing the New NASCAR Stockers"
Comment on 1 pic of Bobby Allison's '72 Monte Carlo. Is mostly a head on shot with small view of the right side. Said the sides were gold and top red.
Yet in a couple of other pics of the car on the track one can tell that they had it backwards.
Oh, and all the pics are B/W on sepia(?) colored paper, so that probably didn't help things.
A couple of pics show an "oil cooler" under the front bumper and just above the spoiler of the #11 Petty STP Dodge driven by Buddy Baker.
But pcs of the 1:1 Dodges one cannot see the front clearly.
Part of the pic caption says: The NASCAR racers are all wearing combination spoiler/oil coolers this year. (1972)
However the 2 color photos on the cover of the Petty #43 and Baker #11 look like there could be a screened area right above the front spoiler pm both cars...(??)
Of course the article praised the MPC NASCAR racing kits include 1/25 scale duplicates of the reral machine's rollcages and interiors too. _________________ Ed. K |

The cars from that time were way away from generic than they are now no two cars were the same that's for sure. Like was said it drives the rivet counters crazy. |

Sensat, please post some pics.
Nichels cars were pretty much all the same. A lot of cars were skinned and used well into the 70s.
The Petty cars would have been newer, but the coolers were behind the headlight openings!
Same with the Owens car... |

Does anyone have the book:
Chrysler, Plymouth & Dodge Stock Cares
By Dr. John Craft
If so, on page 85 there is a color shot of Petty's STP Dodge Charger that has some king of screen below the bumper, as well as a B&W pic on page 93 that shows the same type screen during a pit stop, just above the front air dam... _________________ Ed. K |

Saw those pics in my copy of the book.
Yes, those areas were screened, from 1971 to 1977 on Petty cars and probably all the other Mopars out there. (you'd have to do a survey)
Reason? Keep crap out of the radiator and reduce flow into the radiator.
Spoiler pushes the air over the car, and some to the sides.
NOTE: left headlight opening screened in front of the oil cooler.....
There was no oil cooler under the bumper on 1:1 Petty cars.
Indeed, page 94 of the same book shows the oil cooler mounted behind the left headlight opening!
Now, did K&K use an under the bumper duct, leading to the oil cooler?
Again, more research on the K&K Dodge from 71 to 77 is in order.
An oil cooler under the bumper would be in a more vulnerable location to get dirt & tire debris build up, leading to failure.
Check out this link I posted on dodgecharger.com

Shows the oil cooler intake! |
