I was going to try this a year ago and it stalled. I just purchased the kit and need some good images mainly of the roll cage and engine. Thanks.---John

Black roof was Daytona 500, white top was Firecracker. Smile Interior and roll bars were Petty blue, as became the norm for many years.

Hey, we all know Richard's no looker and... if them women don't find you handsome, they should at least find you handy! Wink

(P.S. Are you considering the sealed pan version?)

I've seen that picture somewhere in the past, aerodynamics? Which car had this "futuristic" approach? Daytona?---John

Daytona. You can see the black top in the upper right corner. There's a bunch of underside photos on the Peterson archive site but obviously they can't be posted here. It was pretty extensively covered underneath from what I can tell, including the driver's area floor as well. I don't know what the end results were but, it seems to me that would make the car too slick, too loose. Never heard of them doing it more than the once so I don't know if the car remained like that the rest of the year. It would stand to reason NASCAR wouldn't let something like that go on for very long.

Remember Chrysler asked other Plymouth teams not to park next to Petty at Daytona due to modification on his car.

Yunick's Chevelle had the same smooth belly pan at the 68 Daytona race and was listed as one of the ten things he needed to remove. Confused:

The floorpan was extensively modified from the front firewall to the rear firewall.
It didn't appear to be add on panels, but the actual floor was changed.

Ingenious. Only car that could run with the fastback fords.
The extreme rake and laid back grille (bumper actually pulled forward)
got a laminar flow over the car, cutting drag.

All the underhood bars were unique to the car, because of the dropped front.

Certain angles make the wheels look tucked in, because they were!
Another trick that re-surfaced when Bill Elliots's 1985 Ford narrow bodied T-Bird ruled.

I was at MIS in 1975 and the women were all over Richard! Cool

Same thing at his birthday party a year later at Daytona. Very Happy

Looking at the picture of the underside rear of the Petty # 43 Plymouth, in the far left of frame is the lettering Spl. and the triangle rear side window of the # 71 K & K Insurance Spl.

Pretty sure both inner fenders, and stock radiator support were gone by '68 also.
Not that they would've fit Very Happy

Yes, for sure, the inner fenders and production rad supports are gone.
Nichels built cars were the same...

But the Petty car was "squashed" down in front!

Dr. Craft asked me to post these photos for him. I believe most were collected from the Petersen archives, they have some detail shots of the underhood, chassis, and exterior.

Very true! You've got to love the attention to detail around the spring hangers, among other spots.

Mike's sells the Plastic Performance Products wheels and tires, which are as close as you can get.

Yes. Very good products too. Those Goodyear Blue Streaks look great on a Petty Blue car.

i too have this build part started and sitting on the shelf. what i would like to know also is where to get those little road runner decals that you see in the photo of the rear pillar/post. that is one of the things that stopped me from finishing it. that and what to use to stipple the black painted roof.

also i heard the roof was narrowed. i sawed my body right down the middle to remove some material.

The Powerslide sheet for the '68 Petty cars has the little Roadrunner decals.

For the roof, try Krylon "Hammered" black.

I think I read somewhere that the vinyl roof was to pull attention away from some other mods that were done to the car. it didn't help as seen in the pics with duct tape and then the King taking a hammer to the upper windshield frame. you don't win 200 races without pushing the rules.

It wasn't vinyl, nor was it done to distract. It was an experiment using a paint that dimpled and looked much like the surface of a golf ball. This was done on the theory it would break up the air better. The break around the window was a bad weld that allowed the roof to lift at speed.

As an aside, "Hammered black" paint will have way too large of dimples.

Also known as The Boundary Layer Effect, the same reason for the 1970 Dodge Challenger hood scoop being elevated a few inches above the hood. Chrysler gained much knowledge from their NASA efforts.
A rumor persists that the # 43 Roadrunner roof panel came loose from the windshield header - due to a bit TOO MUCH Acid Dipping causing a weakening of the body shell. Rolling Eyes

Vintage articles had the other teams wondering WHY the black roof??
They looked up instead of under.

So many things done to this car: bumper pulled forward, front chopped & lowered, underside "cleaned up", narrowed?? Possibly.
Body was moved on the chassis.

Look at back view, tires are tucked in along with the spring moved inboard!

A rolling work of art!!!
