The original issue Charger Daytona had a "factory" style chassis. After that, they all had the same interior cage/chassis pan with different valve covers for different engines but, all generic. _________________ "Dude, it's not Camelot... it's only a model." "Details man, I need details!!" |

Original chassis was modified for the 1983 Regal kit...then again for the re-issues by R2/AMT/MPC....just to confuse things! |

Didn't the Isaac Torino have an alternate set of cage bars? Or was that in a later issue? _________________ Bill Jobson is my real name. |

When we (Model King) reissued the 72 Torino it had both cages and other parts. |

The '72 Torino and every version of the Laguna had extra roll cage parts molded in the same tool that produced the body and unique parts such as front and rear firewalls that had to match the body contours. Those kits also had all the earlier parts, those were grouped into a different mold base so they could be molded in black for the originals while the bodies were usually molded in color. Because they were in a separate mold it didn't make sense to close off those gates, especially since they were running the Petty and Baker Chargers at the same time and those kits required the original cage parts. |

The began working on the roll cage when the Cannonball Run Malibu was done, it had two seats. |

And RC2 removed the wrong seat when they returned the kit to a race car kit.
THEN Salvinos copied the wrong seat for their OLDS kit.
Now you know the rest of the story! |

I always liked the Cannonball kit as it was the only MPC stocker to come with a seat bolstered on the correct side! I used to scrounge the seats out of the MPC Camaros and Firebirds as their seats had the bolster on the right and no so-so seat belt detail. Perfect for using aftermarket belts.

Well.........
The original MPC kits came with the bolster on the right/correct side of the seat. When MPC tooled the extra parts for the Cannonball kit they mirrored the correct seat into the seat with the bolster on the left/incorrect side. When Model King reissued the kit the right/correct bolstered seat insert was missing so we had to use the wrong seat.......this continued into the R2 reissues and Salvinos kits. Rumor has it Salvinos may correct theirs.
More than you ever wanted to know!!! |

YOU ARE CORRECT!
I had to pull a mint Baker #71 out.......
SO the Cannonball retool created the correct seat!!!!
I think the blind love for these old MPC kits when they cam out blinded my memory!!
Pulling out the old kits has got me wanting to build one!!! |
