Interior floor and rear firewall is spatter gray trunk paint. Cage bars are semi gloss black. Engine is dark red.

That raises the question: Does anyone make a spatter paint in scale?

No, its usually done in steps with a low pressure airbrush (or toothbrush!).
I accidentally discovered a method when some white primer overspray misted a gray primer surface. Looked pretty good - and visually to scale.

I make spatter paint by painting the whole thing grey. Then I mist black and white over that from about 2 foot away. All this is done with rattle cans.

Okay. I've had to use an old toothbrush before to "fleck" paint onto my base. I might try your methods.
