Well here goes, I attempted to start a 68 Charger build last spring but life happened and it got put on hold. To get back in the mood after not building one model last year I dug through my stash and found something that is basically a box stock build no fabricating needed.
This will be the Bre Datsun 510 as driven By Bobby Allison had all the stuff for a few years so it is time to get it done.

I did a little pre paint gluing today and this kit had really bad flash on the roll bar tree that I had to clean up

Yeah! I've been looking over my shoulder at this kit along with it's 240Z sister since they was still on the shelves! I agree with Tony and I will be following your progress closely.

Built both back in the '70's. IF I had to chose, I would go with the 510, as it was a neat kit to build, while the 240Z was Revell's slightly modified version of their street version.

Still have both sitting around packed away somewhere....These are a few that have survived all the purges I've done since 1980......

I think at this point everybody knows if I'm home I'm either working on my models or spending time on YouTube looking for vintage racing documentaries. Or I'm on the fourm irritating somebody. Anyhow, tonight I found a great one on this subject matter." Datsun 510 and the BRE team Trans Am 1971 season" is a very in-depth look at John Morton and the factory Datsun team pursuing the under 2.5 Trans Am title. Even if you don't have an interest in these cool little cars, it's worth watching. It's on the SRVAcom channel. Enjoy!

I love that Bobby would race anything with wheels but I don't remember him in the Datsun. Research time!

I love YouTube! Because I watched the movie from 1971 about John Morton and the Datsun 510 winning the under 2.5 Trans Am championship, I get on there today and get these links to Adam Carolla's car cast. And Adam Carolla has Bobby Allison's 72 Datsun 510 which not only they showing in detail, but there's some footage of it on the racetrack as well. And of course, it's been restored to as raced. Okay, does anybody know about availability of the Revell Datsun 510 bre kit? Was it ever reissued? How rare is it? I want one!

If there is a list of any make or model of car Bobby did NOT race, it would be a very short one.

I am using the kit that was issued in 1996 with aftermarket decals.

Wow just checked ebay and see what this kit goes for now 60 to 80 bucks, I have had mine for many years I really do not remember what I paid but it was no where near that.

I have several good sources for older kits and, after I have mine, I will let any of the interested parties on this post know if there's any more. You cannot go by posted prices on eBay. That 60 to $80 is what somebody is trying to get for the kit, not what they're actually selling for. EBay is definitely not a price guide, try explaining to that uninformed non hobbyist who has a bunch of old glue bomb kits he found in the Attic of a house he just bought! I'm going to make some calls and send some emails this week, PM me if you are also looking. The two YouTube videos sealed the deal! That, and fond memories of my 510 AFX slot car.

Seems to me this kit was reissued in the last 10 years if not in the past 5 years, give or take a year or so......

Progress update, I am really enjoying this build, box stock the biggest issue has been cleaning the flash off of the smaller parts.

Never thought I'd be excited looking at something that only has half an engine in it! Looking real good! I hope those videos, particularly the Adam Carolla ones with all the engine compartment shots, helped.

When BRE (Brock Racing Enterprises) was racing these Datsuns in SCCA, the 510s in B/Sedan, and the 240Zs in C/Production, I was working as an SCCA Tech Inspector in the Cal Club Region (Southern California, so Riverside, Willow Springs, Ontario Speedway, Santa Barbara, and occasional forays down into San Diego area). I Tech Inspected these cars far too many times to count or even to remember a particular time. Great people to work with and the cars went like stink. Even though my dad worked for Toyota and was responsible for performance matters at the time, I had huge respect for these cars and really liked them. Then vastly more recently, I worked with John Morton on a 67 Mustang Shelby Trans Am vintage race car restoration project. Still an excellent driver and looks fit enough to jump into a Le Mans GTP again too.

I know my post here doesn't help build the model, but had to share it. I have some of these kits stashed away. Look to be great kits to me.

There is a "street" version of this kit recently available that I think is all there except for the BRE decals. The box art doesn't show the BRE markings anyway.

The stories and history of race cars and teams back in the day is what makes building the "back in the day" cars so much more fun. Thanks for sharing.

Nice Build so far !!! I never realized that motor was NOT a cross-flow head design !?! Shocked Never knew Bobby Allison drove one, either.
My High School shop teacher had a 510, " a little souped-up " as he put it, that he used to beat Camaro's & Mustang's with at the Stop Light Grands Prix. The biggest problem he had with it by the 1980's was finding High - Octane pump gas for it; I recall he said it had 9.5 ? Compression Ratio ??? He said 4 gallons AvGas from Fullerton Airport per tank fixed the problem; my dad would use the same solution for the family 1969 Lincoln Continental, though with more AvGas account the beasts' Twenty - Six gallon fuel tank !!! Laughing

Man RJ...you're doing some fine work here...I also didn't know that B.A. drove the Datsun. This is way cool. I'd like to build this car also. I'm a big fan of Bobby Allison.

Great job, RJ! I picked up a 510 at a PHX swap meet awhile ago and my intention was to build a historic racer without a bunch of modifications and aftermarket parts. Looks like you had the same idea, and it turned out nicely.
