the primer that the Penske cars wear during their test sessions looks to be darker than your average primer, darker than any primer I have.

contemplating doing the Blaney, since I have some leftover decals.

after perusing the online Testors website catalog, went to my local hobby shop and asked them to order me a can of this

any thoughts? dunno what I will try and use if they can't get me that camo grey.

Can i have an example? I use Testors stuff because that’s what i have access to without driving an hour or so. My LHS didn’t have any “dark” grey primer.

You're not an enamel guy or I would suggest that Ollies has a gray paint that is very close, and then maybe spray that over a flat black primer and do a dull clear coat over your decals. I'm almost certain I have a gray close to that. For everyone else that might read this, Ollies also has a chassis super light gray ( almost white) that is ideal for the newer cars, I think I sent you pics of that paint before brother.

I use enamels for everything but the body and the metallic colored parts. Problem is that I don’t have an Ollie’s anywhere near me.

The color you have selected (Testor's Camo) looks like a good match. You can buy dark gray primer from an auto parts store, but that is usually a lacquer.

One thing for you to consider is to spray the primer with a gloss coat before applying the decals. Decals over a flat paint can silver. If you are already aware of this, then please disregard.

So, went to my LHS and ordered a can of the “dark” grey camo, spoon tested it and it’s much, much lighter than the color swatch on their website. So that sucks. Perused the Tamiya site and found some aircraft possibilities, but would have to see them in person before i buy. Possibly AS-27 which is “gunship gray 2”. Hope it’s a flat tone, i assume it is since it’s an aircraft color.

So, at the suggestion of the LHS owner, i looked up “hot rod primer” online. Apparently this is traditionally a dark gray... found some Dupli Color on Amazon, purchased is assuming it’s gonna be good. Let’s hope...

Have you tried the camo grey over a flat black basecoat?

Eeh... it’s pretty light gray, not sure that a dark basecoat would make enough of a difference. Like i said, the hot rod primer is already ordered. Keeping my fingers crossed.

Testors Euro Gray II (if I recall correctly) looks to be almost dead on to that.

Just a thought here:

Is that Penske car simply wrapped in gray? Looks kind of semi-gloss, or even glossy around the nose. Confused

Yeah, the nose does, especially on the 22. I have some other pics of the #12 test car at the Roval and it looks all flat.

I suspect the Superspeedway cars had the clear slippery wrap on the nose over the primer for bump drafting.

Did you try spraying the grey you have over a flat black base? It may make it dark enough.

Here's that 'slippery wrap' on the nose of the SHR 41 today at Talladega.

Laid down coats of the Dupli Color today, it looks spot on. Will post when it’s done.
