Richmond, March 11 1979 why was Richard Petty`s Monte Carlo blue with STP red strips on the hood, roof and trunk? I have seen one grainy photo. Does anyone have photos of this blue car and any information? Thanks |

Can you expand a little? That pretty much describes the bulk of Petty's STP cars. _________________ "Dude, it's not Camelot... it's only a model." "Details man, I need details!!" |

This one?
STP was trying to cut their funding at minor races because of going winless in '78 so the Pettys were cutting the amount of red on the car. After Petty won at Daytona STP came through with more money but not in time to get the car prepared for Richmond painted with the usual amount of STP Red. |

AHA! Now had you (Radar) said there was no red on the sides I might have caught on quicker. I'd like to see better pics of that one myself! _________________ "Dude, it's not Camelot... it's only a model." "Details man, I need details!!" |

Taking a look at pics of King's 1979 Daytona 500 - winning Oldsmobile; there are no red stripes or STP logo on the hood at all. Richard said in his 1976 autobiography King of the Road that "... the STP red is really hard to paint; to get the right gloss. And it can't be touched up, so the front and bottom of the body had to be blue. "

So this raises more questions. What did the race #1 Riverside car and the race #3 Rockingham cars look like. What race was the car back to what we are accustomed too? |

Best I can remember, there was a feud going on about $$$'s between STP & Petty Enterprises. This livery on the car pointed out to STP how much exposure the current level of sponsorship money would get them on the car.
BTW the car had the normal day-glo red and Petty blue scheme at Riverside but without an STP oval on the hood & at Daytona the car lack the normal day-glo red stripes or the STP oval on the hood. By the next race, Atlanta 500, the funding issues were resolved & the car appeared in the normal Petty/STP livery but with 3 smaller additional STP ovals on the quarter panels. |

Seeing the STP Dodge many times in the 70's, including 2 close up times, one at a Detroit Autorama and at the Volusia Mall in Daytona, that STP color
POPS and almost sears your eyes in the sun!!
It was always hard to capture the full impact of that color on film.
Add in variables in the exposure time, developing process, amount of lighting available and the car never looked the same twice.
Today, another variable, the laptop or PC monitor!
It's also well known that any fluorescent colors fade quickly in the sun. |

I have various items I painted Petty Blue as a kid. Still look Petty Blue to me! Still have a can of TB3 MoPar paint (1972-3 Dodge Super Blue)
The cap is exactly the same as the original headlight door cover from the #88 Engineering Daytona, and it was painted that color in 1969.
At one point, I was going to send Tom the pics. He was then going to try various model paints to see which one was the winner! |
