Did 1930s bodied jalopy racers use stock fuel tank and battery location? If not where were they located?

I only go back to the very early '60s but I've seen surplus Jerry cans, the old VW tanks that you filled directly through a filler neck in the top of the tank, and various small drumlike containers that were cut down and mounted as fuel tanks.

Probably the most common location for the battery in my memory was either on or alongside the frame near the starter. I've seen them mounted onto the firewall just above the starter too.
