It was called the American Challenge Cup but it was the 1962 version of the All-Star race. Ten cars for ten laps at Daytona on February 10.

I just purchased an 8mm film scanner and this was one of the reels I found in the family collection. I mean it's 8mm movies shot from the grandstand at a 2.5 mile track - how much can you really see? But it shows the start and the close finish pretty good.

Fireball started last and was second by the middle of 1 and 2. Watch him on the outside at the start. He said he was in high gear turning 4,000 rpm when they threw the flag and everyone else was in third gear.

Thought some here might enjoy seeing it. And cool to me that someone from my family was there to shoot it.

Thanks so much for sharing this. My firsr superspeedway race was in Daytona in 63 and this really reminded me of the way the track looked then and how the cars looked going down backstretch from grandstands. You could even see the open space to left of Campbell grandstand where they would build the Weatherly grandstand a few years later

Very cool.. that is so real like I was there back in the day. Too bad they didn't have sound back then. All those superstars and the bleachers were empty.

Probably because it was run on the Saturday 8 days before the 500.
