I have a few questions that have perplexed me for a while now about this engine. Neither intake manifold provided in the '66 Impala kit are correct for Smokie's '63 Chevy, correct? Also, was there a correct race intake made for this engine in plastic, or resin? Second, is the correct air cleaner for the"Mystery Engine", with the single intake on it, correct for the one that Smokie used on his '63 Impala engine, and for how many years was the single intake air cleaner housing used, before it was modified to the double air intake air cleaner that Junior used on the '71 Monte Carlo, and how many years was that basic configuration used? Also, was that air cleaner ever made in plastic, or resin? Thanks in advance for any help with these questions.

In one of the Smokey 63 Impala pics I have it shows the single intake air filter box ducting to the passenger side of the firewall. I believe I read in Mike Clement's book that his dad invented this air box design. It is included in the Lindberg Don Nicholson 1961 Impala kit. Not sure if it is in the latest AMT release though. Scales Unlimited has a resin version of this air box too. Smokey used the dual ducted version on his Chevelle in 1968. Not sure if he used it on his 65 Impala as I have never seen any pics of the engine on that one.

Would also like to add that I found this air cleaner also in AMT's '62 Super Stock kit, with a nice set of headers, and a very nice set of cast iron exhaust manifolds. Just in case anybody else is interested.

The '66 Impala annual kit's instructions shows two intakes, a single, and dual carb setup. However, the '66 Modified Stocker only has one intake in that kit, a single carb intake. I'm thinking that the GN race manifolds were different from the stock intakes, externally, and for sure internally. Also guessing that the dual carb intake was for drag racing. Thanks for the sweet pics of the intake manifolds.

What do you mean "stock" and "race" intakes? The "Mystery" engine was an
engineering prototype. Only 40-some were built, none ever installed in a
production car.

I guess you are talking about the AMT '66 Impala kits? Because Revell made one as well.

Sometimes the part in a model kit doesn't look like the real deal, at all. Thanks for the references, and clarification.
