I am attempting a somewhat accurate of the Bud Moore Torino as it appeared in October, 1972. Combination of the old Johan/AMT and the re-issued MPC based kit. MPC body. Chassis uses the AMT frame with the MPC front clip, and Monogram rear axle and suspension. The AMT/Johan roll cage fits the body like a glove, so am using that. Decals from the Ertl/MK reissue of the MPC kit, which I believe were designed by Dave Van. Paint is Krylon Farm and Implement school bus yellow.

Outstanding so far! I REALLY like what you've done with the chassis. Thinking now about doing the same thing with a chevelle I'm working on that , like you I'm happy with the cage fit and the amount of detail I can get with the AMT chassis/cage, but would like to have more, better detail with the hood open. Great job and please keep us updated as you go along.

Looks like the AMT/JoHan chassis with 90's AMT trailing arm set up.....JoHan has short arm chassis.

Thanks, Fireball, I am using the the JoHan/AMT frame (from the firewall back) with a Monogram (I am out of AMT donors right now) rear end and arms. I needed to shorten the 1/24 arms a bit. The scale difference is not that noticeable to my eye. Notice how flat the floorpan of the JoHan/AMT is. It puzzles me why with all the nice detail they put into the chassis sand frame, the floorpan is so blank, it's like they ran out of time...

And Dave, am I correct you designed the #15s in the MK kit?

I did print my own Bud Moore Engineering decals. scrounged the other contingencies.

Chassis pretty much done. Minor cutting/trimming to get the various kits parts to work together. MPC engine fit pretty well. I cut the dumps and reversed the direction to get more length between the headers and the bend point.


As I might have mentioned, the JoHan/AMT cage fits the body shell nearly perfectly. Just some minor trimming was necessary.

The floor pan looks fine to me, and that floor pan always puzzled me as well. What made you put the MPC front clip on the JoHan chassis, the MPC engine you used? I also like what you did with the headers/exhaust dumps. I'm really enjoying this build, immensely. Thanks for sharing with all of us.

The MPC front clip is a pretty good duplication of the fabricated front ends of the builds of that period. Here is the Bud Moore clip and it looks close to the MPC:


I used the MPC engine as the JoHan Boss 429 would have been wrong. I know the MPC engine (from their Torino kit) is not the most accurate but the heads and valve covers seem to be fairly convincing.

Doing here what I often do for attaching wheels. I cut a short length of copper wire and fit it into the axle. In this case it fits snugly in the Monogram axle.



The wire fits a bit loose in the PPP wheel back but I cut an opening on the inside of the wheel back so the wire passes through. It is opened enough for a snug fit. That's the copper wire at the center of the wheel back. I can now slide the wheel in/out to adjust fitment.

Thanks! Believe me, my level of accuracy and tidiness is nowhere near what I see from others here. All I want is a Torino with a somewhat accurate rear suspension, which will look good on the shelf.

That is a question I have not seen any photographic evidence to answer. Dr. Craft was generous enough to share this photo in the past, which to his eye looks like long arms.

I am not sure, though, if the later season car Donnie and Dick Brooks drove was the same as the early Riverside/Pearson car.

thanks, I thought it was the same color. In the photo, I see a long arm on the right rear, can't really tell on the left rear. Wonder what car JoHan used to base their kit off of, as it has short arms.

JoHan's chassis was strictly factory, picked up from their promo model, and would not have been used in competition because of the location and angle of the links.

Wasn't JoHan's promo car a one piece chassis? Did they just hypothesize, all the race components of that kit? If they did, they did a fair job of it, for that time period. Any progress on this wonderful build?

I'm thinking JoHan was working up a full kit and the plans changed. Shame because they did a beautiful job with the frame and suspension. I was a big fan of the '72 Torino at the time and would have bought a few, probably.

I hope to finish it up soon. Getting the stance and wheel fitment right is the most finicky stage for me. And I temporarily misplaced my PPP tire letter decals...

After considering other options, came back the PPP combo.


Its interesting how the tires seem to look fuller once they are dulled down and decaled, I'm satisfied with the way they will be filling the wheel openings.

Getting close - but several details to do.

I am not using the kit glass. I cut out clear styrene windows for a better scale look. I tried to get the rear glass more flush, and replaced the chunky MPC straps with the JoHan kit straps which I shaved down to be thinner. Front windshield also now has reinforcing bars.

I worked on that. The '72 season Moore Torino was opened up a bit more at the front than the later white Torinos, which are close to what the MPC body comes with.

Michael - I took some pictures of underside rear of that car at the Talladega museum. (I was curios about the trailing arms). I will look for those to show you.

Really nice job on the fenders. I seem to recall reading/seeing pics, that when Bud first went to that body style, that early in the season they ran the short truck arms, and later in the season went to the long truck arms. I'd love to see some pics of the car in the museum, that'd be awesome!!!

Build looks great. The April '73 issue of Stock Car Racing magazine includes an article on Bud Mooore's Torino. One of the article's photos appears to show the long truck arms. The picture caption reads: "the massive truck arms serve to reduce roll steer and offer better weight distribution."

Yes! I have the issue. It covers the white "Sta-Power" car for the '73 season.

Man Bill nice job on this one! In looking at the suspension pic John sent you that car had a watts link rather than the usual panhard bar. Cool I always thought a watts link was better geometry wise. Kinda heavy though.

Wow - good eye! I thought that was the hose connection. Well that's one difference from the '73 season Sta Power car, which had the panhard bar.
