Im going to come to the show just to see this in person! Awesome Job. I am in awe.

Keep watching this then to make sure it will be completed by then. D-day approx. 3 weeks out. Only thing that'll kill me is if the hobby shop guy can't get my paint in time!! He said if the warehouse or whoever his supplier is has it in stock, it'll take him a week to get it so I'll get all this bodywork knocked out and have it primed and ready to go when the can of paint gets here. Plus its lacquer so it'll cure faster than enamel boogie

If you come to the show, I'll be putting on the table my Winston Silver #3 that I got done earlier this year and my #7 Danica Patrick car that got finished up a few months ago. The dayglo decal on the bottom is chipping but screw it. I told my buddy that I built it for, it would hit atleast one contest before I handed it over to him. Both of those builds are posted in the speedway if you havent seen them

I think you got it just right. thumbsup thumbsup
When the cars are gridded up before engine start, they do seem to sit a little higher - before the down force comes into play.
But I think it just looks "racey-er" the way you've got it. thumbsup

Talked to Mick since he built this car. Paint I ordered is Model Master "Custom Lacquer Line" of base/clears. Color is AMC Sterling Silver Metallic I believe and I ordered the can of Ultra Gloss clear that goes with this paint. Only other thing I have to do is spray the TV panel gloss black. What a simple paint job Laughing Laughing Laughing

Well I'm putting it all on the table here.....Never tried to do this, normally I just stick to straight Steel out of the jar for the exhaust but after studying Clay's cars I just had to improve so.........The only thing I could find at the hobby shop in Model Master line close to clear orange was their Turn Signal Amber. Works for me! I dug out the airbrushes and sat out on the deck this evening and went to town. I tried to "heat stain" them using the Turn Signal Amber, Semi Gloss Black, then after they dried, hitting them a lick with Dullcote. I'm very pleased. I don't take to the level of Clay and Dave but its fine for this ol' boy. I'd love some input on whether they look real or not. I'm really getting hyped up on this build. I couldn't do it without this forum either. I love feedback on whether my stuff looks OK or whether it sucks and seeing the great builds on here encourages me to go outside of my normal and try new things to improve. Thanks to everyone here! thumbsup

Here is my little setup I had going on outside and just after I got the Amber and Black on..

And here is after the Dullcote and me holding them up to the engine. I think this completes the total powertrain package as far as looks, plain jane steel colored headers would trash the whole look...Now this means I can get the engine in, hook everything up, and start working on scratchbuilding the right side exhaust boogie

And today I got a second coat of primer on the nose. It's looking better and better. Still got some small stuff to get smoothed out and finish side skirts but I'm getting there! (Primer was still wet b.t.w.)

Looking good with the headers, i think they fit in well, you may want to dry brush the engine a little to give it a slight used look and then everything will blend in well?

I have that black wash, I'll hit it a lick on the block and heads and it will give it a dirtier look when it dries. I have to wait and let the pigment settle back to the bottom of the jar. I use semi gloss black that is thinned down for the airbrush and when it sits for awhile it works good (but I just used it today doh2 )

Thanks Jake. Keep this in your mind, these are "test mules" for new tricks, I believe you were following the #25 camo build I have temporarily put on the back burner. Well I'm learning lots of new things between the GoDaddy car I did and this one. So if everything goes as planned, these new tricks will be transfered over to that build when I jump back on it. I want to get that car done for the local MDA contest probably mid-March of next year so it will be returning to the board soon!

Weathered the block and heads a little. Pigment hadnt settled enough so I just drybrushed the mixture on lightly. The angle of the photo makes it look dirtier than it really is

Test fitting some stuff. Motor slides in and out of the chassis like butter! Everything looks good. Need to paint driveshaft that I enlarged to make it look fatter than the puny kit one then I'll be able to glue motor in and make all the wiring connections. One thing I do not like at all is how big that cowl is and how the motor sits way back. Kinda hides it all. One thing I have debated was cutting the center section out and gluing it to the air cleaner so you can see the distributor and all but the downside to that is I forgot to cut the coil off the firewall so that will stand out and I dont know if I could pull off trying to make that represent something other than a coil or not

Little tidbit for this afternoon.....I was looking again at my handfull of ref. photos, most of which are from practice/qualifying which sucks, I fortunately have 2 or three of the race. I noticed a few things on the body that I am working on. The little naca duct @ the drivers side window is not on the raced car and I also noticed the front of the window opening is squared off instead of coming to a point so I got that taken care of, next thing I caught is the double naca duct plate on the passenger side instead of the window, so I cut down the kit window and will add decals for the ducts and putty up the front edge on the "B" pillar and roll that edge to match drivers side. Last thing I caught while painting the braces on the rear window was 4 cross braces so got those done too! I would love to find a head on race photo to see how the tear off tabs are arranged. I only have a side profile race picture. The head on shots I have are qualify/practice and the whole grille tape is different, has no tear offs, and it didnt have the double naca duct thing on the passenger side either so there were changes going on and I'm trying to catch them all!! I know this will not matter to most but I'm going for accuracy and catching all the little things. I'll know they are there Laughing Laughing

Entering semi-panic mode. Just realized today there is only 10 days left. Checked on paint and it should be in tomorrow so now that means I'll have paint and still body prep to do (working on taking care of that now). Added skirt to drivers side and studied race photo and there is no rear skirt on passenger side, just pipes so I'm flipping the kit one, no sweat! Used aluminum tube to add more diameter to driveshaft, well I used flat white, let it dry then glosscoted it with 2 coats (didnt have gloss white in a spray) and was painting the yokes and u-joints and the white started to peel off. I know paint doesnt stick well to aluminum. Was my problem that I didnt prime it first? I used flat white paint but it wasnt flat white primer.

Get yourself some self etching primer. I forget the brand I use but it is a green. Also whipe the pipe with a thinner to really clean it before the primer. That should do the trick.

I did wipe it with thinner. I shot it with actual primer and it looks good. Let it dry overnight and hit it with the flat white after work tomorrow. I dont have time for mistakes at this point in the game. I cut off the center of the cowl so you can actually see the carb and top of motor. I used .040 sheet to make a bottom and back for the air cleaner and used a hole punch in the bottom. Funny thing is its the correct diameter to sit down on the carb Laughing I'm happy with that, now to make the "U" braces for both ends of the cowl. Still need to hinge the hood and come up with an idea for hood pins since I dont have any PE ones.....lets see how creative I get with craft wire now Laughing Laughing Laughing I sure do have a sickness! When I dont have it, I'll make it!!!

Yes, definitely a sickness, I couldn't resist to whip one up woo crazy eeeek Yaa

The recipe: some kinda small gauge craft wire and a pair of tweezers

Now the real trick is to see if I can do this 5 more times Laughing

On a side note.......the airbox.....

Great hood pin!

Only suggestion I could make, for repeatability, would be to see if you could find a few pieces of aluminum or brass rod, and see if you could make a small jig for bending them. That way you could use it again for future builds.

I made the other 5 last night. It took about 5 minutes or less to get them bent up. It would take me longer than that to make a jig but good suggestion! Time is winding down on this! Did some painting on body this weekend. Got the inside pewter gray and clear coated, painted the tv panel and spoiler black tonight. Just have to go pick up the silver paint tomorrow after work, mask it, and shoot the silver. As far as chassis, I made a earnhardt bar yesterday and got it painted and put in, driveshaft got completed so I can drop in motor now, need to put in the rear window dash, and make the other parts of the hood hinges. It'll be close to the wire, as long as I dont have any painting issues, it'll be smooth sailing!!

One other thing for your consideration is the dash gauge faces. They have no lenses in them so one thing you can try if you wish is use Microscale Micro Kristal Klear dabbed on with a tooth pick. It only needs a small amount and boy will those gauges pop. thumbsup

I dont have any of that. Would elmers glue work? Only thing I really have is Boyd's high gloss enamel and I learned the hard was that it'll smear the paint in the gauge

I'm getting there....5 more days tomorrow. Loving this lacquer right now, especially when the can says 2 hours Mr. Green I'll let it rest overnight and lightly sand the silver/black transition so you cant see it under the decal. I'm ready to say the engine is wrapped up. I think I have everything I need in there, even threw in the throttle linkage rod that hooks to the go pedal. Here's a few shots of tonights progress...Hard to tell the gloss on silver paint but it's there!

Color and 2 coats of clear in 6 hours.....not bad at all, especially when you're under the gun Mr. Green The metallic doesnt show until direct sunlight or the flash hits it, then it pops!

Made the functional hood hinges tonight and got the rest of my hood pins made and painted

Bracing under the hood, just took .020 plastic rod and laid it over the molded in stuff for the 3D effect. Needs another coat of clear and the outside painted

The engine that I'll call done, just missing the upper radiator hose and shocks that I will scratch

Thanks for the kind words. I've gotten so that I can not force myself to do an out of box build anymore.....the detail work has grown on me. I guess different things affect people different ways but it really relaxes me to get off work and come home and work on my cars for a little while

I've use 5 Minute Epoxy before and it worked really well. Elmers doesn't dry glossy. The Microscale Kystal Klear is water soluable and looks glossly after it sets up.
