ED PIMM ENTERED 5 WINSTON CUP EVENTS IN HIS CAREER. 3 IN 1987 AND 2 IN 1988. THIS IS A REPLICA OF HIS 1987 CP 1 BUICK THAT HE DROVE IN THE 1987 PEPSI FIRECRACKER 400. HE STARTED 34TH AND FINISHED 34TH. CONSISTENT TO SAY THE LEAST.

THIS CAR WAS MADE USING THE JNJ 1987 BUICK CONVERSION. THIS WAS MY FIRST ATTEMPT AT THE CONVERSION AND MAYBE MY LAST. NOW I KNOW WHY THESE THINGS NEVER SOLD THAT GOOD. NO, IT WON'T BE MY LAST. I HAVE A VANDETTA AGAINST THIS CONVERSION NOW AND WILL DO ANOTHER TO MY LIKING. I HAD A JNJ 1986 BUICK RESIN BODY THAT I CONVERTED OVER TO THE 1987. PRIMARILY THE MAJOR DIFFERENCE BEING THE SIDE WINDOWS BEHIND THE DRIVER ENTRANCE. THE 86 WINDOW IS RECTANGULAR WHERE THE 87'S ARE MORE TRIANGULAR IN SHAPE. I TOOK THE TIME TO DREMEL OUT THE WINDOWS TO THE RIGHT SHAPE AND CUT OUT CLEAR PLASTIC TO MAKE THE SIDE WINDOWS ONLY TO OVER TRIM THE HOOD WHICH RENDERED THE BODY USELESS. NOT HAVING A SPARE HOOD I PRECEDED TO DEMOLISH THE BODY IN MY DISGUST. THAT WAS 10 MONTHS AGO. I HEMMED HAWED AROUND ABOUT DOING THIS CAR. THERE ARE NO BUICK RESIN BODIES I HAVE SEEN AVAILABLE TO SUIT ME SO WHILE AT A MODEL SHOW EARLIER THIS YEAR I CAME ACROSS 3 OF THE CONVERSIONS WHICH I QUICKLY PICKED UP. I TOOK A WYNNS OLDS AND FOLLOWED THE INSTRUCTIONS VERBATUM TO THE END. THE MAJOR MISTAKE I MADE IS WHEN I CUT THE HOOD I FORGOT TO ALLOW FOR THE FRONT WINDOW PLACEMENT WHICH THRU ME OFF ABOUT 1/8" IN THE END. I'M SOMEWHAT DISAPPOINTED WITH THE FIT OF THE HOOD BUT IT WILL HAVE TO DO pissed pissed . HOWEVER, I DO WANT TO REDEEM MYSELF AND ED'S SONOCO BUICK IS LOOMING ON THE HORIZON TO DO.

ANYWAY, TESTORS GLOSS WHITE FOR THE BODY AND CHASSIS.

I think it looks very good! thumbsup thumbsup
I notice your model has recessed headlights, while the reference shot seems to show some sort of flush-fitting cover (although it's a difficult to tell for sure).
Please don't read this as a criticism - I'm just curious is all. idunno

I would have to say that this was a superspeedway car and they had the covers flush for aerodynamics. I noticed this on his sonoco car as well. It is one of the many alterations I want to do on my next one. None offence taken. I just hope the resin holds up to the puttying and wet sanding.

Great looking car and I am sure it's a one of a kind! :)

Ed had a Aqua/Teal color #98 Buick in 1987 too. Almost the Clabber Girl color, but I don't think that was the sponsor...

It actually looked really cool on track but can't find anything on Google.

Hey, thanks for answering - I never really thought of that. Nowadays they'd have a whole other car for a super speedway;
Maybe back then it was simply a case of attaching the headlight covers! Laughing

Those Buick noses aren't easy to get looking perfect. Yours does look pretty good though. The difference in noses, I believe is one model year. The 86's would have had the rectangular opera window and non-flush headlights. The 87's would have had triangular opera windows and flush headlights. This isn't a 100% fact, but a good general rule.

For Cup cars it's close enough to 100%. When the '86 season started side windows still weren't allowed so Buick created a special option for the stock LeSabre that came with the small quarter window. That allowed the race cars to use the small opening for a slight aero advantage. When NASCAR allowed quarter window glass partway through '86 it was no longer an advantage so the stock '87 Buick didn't have the option of the small quarter window. I don't think I've ever seen a LeSabre Cup car with the large quarter window and '86 headlights (recessed) and it wouldn't have been allowed to use the flush headlights ('87 nose) with the small quarter window.

Tom,

Thanks for the input. I am amazed of the detail you overlook simply by watching a race. I grew up watching these races each week and did not realize the minute details on these cars until you go to build one. No doubt Benny Parsons and Bob Jenkins and don't forget Dr. Jerry Punch went over these things with their weekly "track facts" on espn but at that time who cared. You couldn't build the models then. Thanks again for your insight. Always appreciated on my behalf.
