|
|
So, I found this on Ebay and thought I'd build a Richard Petty from 1963.
Upon getting it in my hands, as was listed, that it had been painted before and then they attempted to strip it. Not sure what it was painted with but as I was working on it to take the Fury trim off and to try and get the rest of the paint it that it had an odor to it. Not sure what pain was used but, after handling the body and washing my hands I could still smell the paint on my hands. Need to try and get it primed.
I went searching through my reference pictures and seen that the Pettys used the Savoy Sedan body. Guess I need to make some door frames
Was the car painted 3 different ways? Looks like it was all Blue, Blue and White and possibly 2 tone Blue? Not sure with them being old photos.

Nice snag getting that body. Even the resin repops are getting hard to find.
As for your question, I never seen the light blue hooded car before, but Lorenzen's car is clearly white in the last photo. Petty's car looks sort of white below the side windows. Old photos can be misleading. I'll ask around. Note when building this is that the 43 on the roof is offset towards the driver's side. |

Does anybody have info about interiors for 1963? Debating about using the smooth door panels out of the Lindberg 1964 Plymouth in the interior since the Johan 1963 interior has the seats molded in, Thought it might be easier to go this route than to try and modify the Johan interior. |

Making some progress all be it slow. Got the door frames in and looking the part of a sedan. Trying to mock up the Johan 1963 Plymouth dash in the Lindberg 1964 Plymouth interior tub.
Then since the weather is very nice here in Maryland, got some color on it. I also used the rear panel from the Lindberg 1964 Plymouth instead of trying to cut up the old Johan chrome piece since the trim panel is molded to the tail lights bezels.

Beautifully restored and modified body and the paint looks mighty good.
Great project so far and I look forward to seeing the interior and chassis work.

Finally had a few minutes to get some modeling accomplished. Been debating about cutting the toe board from Lindberg 1964 Plymouth interior tub and adding some dimension to move the toe board and backside of firewall away from dash to look more appropriate. Started cutting but not finished. Had to do a quick mock up with wheels and tires.

For what it's worth, the hood on that '64 photo is white. The horizontal surfaces are shifted 'way blue, the roof numbers appear match the color of the hood. I believe that car ran a Torqueflite at Riverside also! |

Thanks Tom. I kind of assumed that it was white but wasn't sure. I'm just doing my best judgement call on this car, can't find a whole lot on the 63 car.

You have done a great job converting that Fury to a Savoy. I have that started have come to a stumbling block on the rear light panel how did you convert that. Thanks in advance. |

Thanks. I used the rear body panel from the Polar Lights Petty 1964 Plymouth kit and filled in the rest with plastic. There were small areas to fill because of the different shape taillights from 1963 to 1964. Need to cut out some taillight covers yet.

Finally making some progress. Working on the interior. Haven't been able to find any pictures of the interior so, I'm guessing on it.

I was getting ready to make some taillight covers but, in doing some research for another project I came across footage of the 1963 Daytona 500. Took a screenshot of the rear of Richard's car after noticing that it appears the car still has the factory taillights and bezels installed.

Awesome build. You gave new life to an oldie.
Can't wait to see it when it crosses the finish line.
