John Ardis Supermodified
Anyone familiar with Mobile (Alabama) Speedway back in the 1960's surely remembers the #30 John Ardis supermodified. This car was always the one to beat. The car was driven by some of the best wheel-men of the times including Bobby & Donnie Allison, and Red Farmer just to name a few.
My father was in the Navy stationed at Pascagoula, MS during the mid-60s, and every time Mobile Speedway had a big supermodified show, dad would take me. I very vividly remember the sounds and smells these cars made. It was at the time, the greatest thing on earth! I once complained to dad about the sounds and how it made my ears hurt. I was about 8-9 years old. Dad didn't have any ear plugs so he took out one of his Winston cigarettes, tore off the filter and stuffed the cotton in my ears. We were both happy! Great memories! Great racing!
KIT: AMT Grant King Sprint Car
PAINT: Tamiya TS-49 Bright Red, TS-26 White, and Model Master Metalizers for the met colors. Black is Tamiya XF-1 with semi-gloss clearcoat.
DECALS: Military numbers from the spares box was the closest I get. Powerslide contingencies.
BUILD NOTES: Scratch built the wing using Evergreen. Used Revell Pie Crust tires from the spares box. Wheels are PPP Wide-5s. Added a windscreen using clear windshield from the spares box. Added plug wires and distributor. I did not use the nerf bars from the kit as to stay true to the era.
The real thing:

I had a blast building this. Not the easiest of kits because of some fit issues and virtually no locating pins, but with careful planning and dry fitting, it was manageable. I know she's not 100% accurate but she looks good in my display case and I'm happy with the result.
Thanks for looking and comments and questions are always welcomed!

That is a GREAT build and replica!!!!!
The first GK kit I built was the supermodifed, a the LHS did not have the sprint car version in yet....Found out real quick that it was going to be a challnge to get the frame put together right....once I got the jig that came in the kit, set to get the frames lined up right, by slowly trimming the slots in the jig, thing went smoother after that....but there was more work for the sprint car hood and nose to fit properly.....Built 4 of the supemods and 8 of the sprint car kits. Sprint car kit #9 was deliberately not finished....just built the frame..... _________________ Ed. K |

I don't know how I missed this!
I grew up in the Pascagoula/Moss Point area, my brother raced Supermodifieds at Mobile in that era and I saw Donnie race that car many times. He was extremely hard to beat in a Supermodified in that era. They raced at the Laurel, MS Fairgrounds on Thursday, Five Flags on Friday, Mobile on Saturday, and often at Montgomery, AL on Sunday afternoon. I've seen Donnie get out of that car after winning the feature at Mobile and pull leather gloves off his hands where the palms were all blistered from wrestling those things 4 days a week. |

I don't know how I missed this one either. Same excellent work on this as you do on your full fendered cars. |
