Carlton James "Buddy" Bretherton was born June 27th, 1934 in the small town of Riverdale, GA. He attended his first race at the Alabama State Fairgrounds in Birmingham at age 14 and began helping a family friend who drove a modified at the age of 17. Bretherton ran his first race when he was 19 driving under the assumed name of Buddy James where he finished 4th in the modified feature at Greenville-Pickens Speedway in Easley, SC. He would continue to run 5 more races under that name until his parents, who weren't thrilled about him racing, found out and told him if he was going to race, to use his own last name.

Buddy's first NASCAR Grand National race came at the Atlanta Intl. Raceway in 1960 with young crew chief Harry Hogge. Buddy ran as far up as 3rd but had an engine failure with only 12 laps to go.

Buddy would go on to win 52 races throughout his career including 2 in the Daytona 500. 13 of his wins came when he reunited with Harry Hogge in 1984, the final one coming at Atlanta in 1987. 1988 was riddled with a series of DNFs in Atlanta, Richmond, and North Wilkesboro where Buddy would park the car for undisclosed reasons. Sponsorship started to fall through, eventually leaving Hogge and Bretherton unable to compete in the final 3 events of the season.

Bretherton made his return to the NASCAR Winston Cup Series in the 1989 Daytona 500 driving the #96 Alltel Pontiac Grand Prix for Harry Hogge. Tragically, a fiery crash in turn 3 on lap 174 would claim his life at the age of 54.

AMT kit modified for superspeedway with various decals.

My head canon is that the movie takes place mostly in 1990 which would mean Buddy died in 1989. I chose to have him be from Georgia because in the movie, Buck can be seen wearing a Georgia Bulldogs hat. Also, as I found out from a shot of Ernie Irvan's Michigan car, Alltel had a small presence in NASCAR for at least one race. Laughing

I thought a morphing of John C. Reilly and Morgan Shepard. Regardless, it’s a great looking fantasy build…great work!

Came up with a funny backstory for the rear numbers: Apparently, they had to rush to get the car out the door and forgot the number decal on the rear. So when Dick Beaty asked him about it, Harry went over to Ernie Elliott and asked if he had some extra white 9s. They were kinda big so Harry had to put them on a bit cockeyed. Laughing
