I didn't watch the show but I saw in some of the comments that Salvino's are going to start re-releasing the Lumina's.
Any idea when?
Driver/Decals?
Will it just be a re-pop using the old molds?
Thanks! |

I hope so. Those are some good kits. About the only details they lacked were a jack post and gas overflow tube. |

I would guess something Hendrick related. Can’t think of any other drivers/teams that ran Luminas that Salvinos has contracts with. |

That would be ok, say maybe a Folgers Ken Schrader version. But please don't plate any parts. By then the only chrome would be the rear view mirror. |

Let's hope they have the glass for these and don't have to re-invent the wheel...... |

If I recall, they do have the equipment to make thr bodies, but they do not have the molds for the chassis. Their larger tire would certainly improve the overall look of the old Revell 1/24th Luminas.....am sure the glass will be fine. |

I think Jim said something about waiting on Mike Herman to send over a Lumina kit for them to work with since they did not get the molds. They are going to redesign some issues with the kit from my understanding. My question, is what needs to be addressed? |

I would be very interested to see what changes they would make to the Lumina. I always thought it was a pretty good kit. |

Chassis was used under the '95-'97 Monte Carlo, but that's odd because the Lumina has been reissued in the past 6-7 years and I don't think the round side has been reissued since it was replaced by the slab side version. |

With the hindsight of 30+ years it would be nice to tweak it so that as-raced style '90-'92 and '93 + '94 noses and rear fascias were able to be swapped out. Whether it was in the form of changeable inserts or separate parts. The nose design never looked much like the actual as-raced cars since the Luminas had never been approved when the DoT cars were originally fabricated. The movie cars were used as reference for the kits. |

It will probably not be until late 2023? (due to their contractual obligations.)
But Jim wants to fix the chassis as well< I'm not sure what Revell/Monogram missed on it. |

I am surpised a bit that there would be a Lumina release. Those kits are still cheap and plentiful. |

Yeah, what's a re-pop going to run, $35? Of course that would include a $12 decal. Depending on the improvement, maybe it will be worth it. |

For the life of me what could he do to the chassis to make it better?
Only thing I can possibly think of is moving the one roll bar that goes from the center of the main hoop up to the right front A post. Nascar moved that over and made the bottom attach to the bar going under the dash, I think in 1991 or 1992. |

That was in 1991. Perhaps have an option where you have both versions in the kit. Same with the bumpers. |

They said he was wanting to do some tweaking to the chassis...?? If they had said the body then I would say ok, I always thought the Amt Lumina looked more like the real car, lots of work he could do there. |

Mechanics called those GM mini van 'Death Vans'. A pillars collapsed with the most minor accident......pulling the roof down on passengers. |

Having built two of the new 6th gen Camaros I want support Salvinos all I can
But I just don’t get the purpose of the this effort. At any time of day or night , dozens if not hundreds of Monogram Lumina kits are on eBay. You can easily get one (even an Earnhardt) for under 20 bucks to your door that is new and still shrink wrapped. Days of Thunder kits are a tad more sometimes but not much. Any even less if you get a Gordon, labonte, Rudd or Cope kit.
Now if Salvinos is going to do some updates (like a better fit mechanisms of the pumpkin to rear axle, or a one piece body with tail and nose molded in) I’m on board. But if it’s just a repo of the old Monogram kits exactly as they were, i don’t get it.
Id rather They put energy into new and exciting kits like next gen Camaro
Say like the Camry, fusion, SS from 2013-2017. Or xfinity cars or trucks |

The Luminas will be modified for better fit with a new chassis
SS from 2013-2017 will NOT be done from scratch. Tooling will be bought (also Fusion) if/when available.
No Xfinity nor Trucks in the forseeable future.
Camry requires Toyota/NASCAR licensing as Salvino's did with GM/NASCAR. _________________ << On The Bench --- 2022 Elliott Hooters |

So it's the Monogram body tweaked to fit a new chassis?
Sounds like they re-inventing the wheel again. |

The Lumina last came out in 2006. Unfortunately it was molded in China so it makes sense why they didn't get it from the Atlantis buyout.
I brought this up before, but why won't they take a page out of Round 2's book and 3D scan a kit instead of drawing from scratch? It was brilliant what they did with the International Transtar cabover. Everyone knows R2 is a much larger company ($$$$) than SJR, but when other people in the same business are doing great things, you need to look at it.
Jim gets so offended when people offer ideas/constructive criticism and loves throwing barbs at this place; someday he'll realize we're actually here to help and want this company to succeed in an already small hobby. _________________ Joe Oteri

I got his standard "if you are so smart go start your own model company and show us how it's done" comment earlier this week on Facebook.
I may not be smart or run a model company, but I have just enough common sense if I had a complete tool minus the glass, I'd spend the 20 bucks on Ebay for a kit of said tool and copy the glass, NOT alter the window opening on the body and remake the glass WRONG and then live in denial about it.

I got the same reply from Salvinos when I politely made some suggestions early on in the OLDS 442 project. I made no claim of being an expert other than I grew up in racing garages of Charlotte and they had some things that COULD be improved. Never understood the attitude from day one.
But a good club to be in Gary!!! |

It's amazing the amount of FREE help they were offered.....yet just had a rude reply.....not even 'thanks for your input'.
Monogram and later RM was always open to outside help.......me being one of MANY people they consulted with....making the product better. |

I would really hope if they do anything to the existing Lumina they tool up new bumpers that actually fit, especially if the body they have is the 1993-94 body, which I suspect it likely is since the 1989-92 body was sent overseas.
They have to be one of the least accurate bodies Monogram ever made. Takes a lot of effort to get them to look even somewhat close to the real car. _________________ Billy Kingsley

The original Lumina suffered the same fate as the 83 Thunderbird did.......Based on a movie car!!!! The TB was the Stroker Ace car and the Lumina are DoT........so both are models of movie cars rather than Cup cars! |

The Stroker car was built by Banjo Matthews shop. Monogram was going to do a 1982 Thunderbird to go with the 82 Buicks. But when Monogram went to Ford they said we do not want the 82 Bird as we have a all new car coming. The only 83 Bird in Cup dress in the world was at Banjo's shop. NASCAR made Ford change a number of things before the 83 Bird got the OK.....but Monogram had cut the tooling.....so we got a Ace Bird. I wish Salvinos would do a correct 83 Bird even if it was only fixing the front wheel arch, doors and headlight covers......that alone would be a big step. |
