|
|
This car has a long, complicated history.
It started out as his 1968 Charger which he modified as a 500 for his 69 ride.
My best understanding is that he had another car which was built into his Daytona. The 500 was sold to the Allisons and along the way it was built into a Daytona for Marty Robbins
It eventually was re-bodied into a 70 Charger, the a 71 as it's career continued to LMS with Neil Bonnett at the wheel.
The trace of the car gets muddy from there but it did reappear from time to time until it was finally salvaged and restored to a Marty Robbins Daytona a few years back.
This is what it looked like in 2014...

I have been working on and off on this quest to recreate the badly decayed car as seen in 2014
One year late here it is, as well as a little diorama to go with it
I did my best to replicate the chassis with the unique roll cage reinforcements which were key in enabling James Hilton to certify this was his original Charger
I documented the methods for weathering the car in the Brush Painter Society and the diorama tip in in MCM
I will not elaborate on the details of the project but will be happy to answer any questions you may have
Thank you for looking

Just beautiful work Pierre.
Would/could you explain a bit on the technique & product(s) you used to get such a convincing surface rust effect there? It is extremely realistic to look at and I'm sure I'm not the only one who would enjoy learning from your major skills. |

Thank you AMB. I documented the technique in the Brush Painter Society thread in the Nascar Modeling Discussion section.

The Awesome, Ultimate diorama build. It just boggles the mind how much detailing and effort you put into this masterpiece. It would be neat if the actual guys who worked on this back in 2014 could see it. They would be blown away. I wonder if they ever finished it ? |

Hey Mark, they absolutely finished it. It was presented for Talladega's 50th anniversary in 2019.
The car was restored by Ray Evernham's Big Iron Garage
The whole story of the car was presented my Mecum when it went to auction in 2021. The car's sale of $475,000 was refused because it did not meet the owner's reserve.
James Hilton certified the car in 2014 by the unique reinforcements he welded himself when he owned it. 3rd from last picture you can see one of these 2 bars through the w/s opening. It runs from the cage front right post to the floorpan cross member near the trans hump)
Bobby Allison also certified the car by identification of the front suspension & cradle he fabricated when he built it into a Daytona for Marty Robbins

Pierre, wow, what a beautiful transformation they did from the rust bucket to this excellent looking restoration. I may have inadvertently found out what your next project is. Thanks for posting the answer to my question about whether they finished it or not. |

Thank you all for the kind comments.
I swore I would do something easy for my next project...
I just finished the inventory of all the mods needed...something's wrong with me... _________________ "When you arrive at a fork in the road, take it" - Yogi Berra |

On the first photo, of the actual car, the rear bumper is from a 1971 Charger.
Small detail, but I know you are being very accurate! |

Good point. 68 body, 71 rear bumper, Daytona front clip...that kind of car.
I've seen pics without a rear bumper, skinned as a 70, 71 etc...
I did not have a 71 bumper I could use so here it is. _________________ "When you arrive at a fork in the road, take it" - Yogi Berra |
