|
Here it is finished:
Had to add a radiator hose and clamps to my parts box radiator!
A little "battle damage" to nerf bars and I drilled license plate holes in the bumpers.
More battle damage and the right front, according to the rules of the era, had to be a "safety hub".
The yellow ovals were challenging, as the decal numbers were apparently bigger in relation to the door height than the "artist's rendering". I actually made .040 styrene templates for the ovals and the dark green areas on the "C"-pillar so all would be the same size and shape. First 3 color paint job in many years, dark green and yellow are Tamiya and the lighter green is "Limelight" by Model Car World, first use of my airbrush in probably 20 years. |

That came out really good! Looks way to shiny though, but I guess it is just the start of the race season |

Nice!
'Bernie's Salvage' LOL - I remember that - those contrived AMT sponsors were great. _________________ Bill Jobson is my real name. |

I got the size of the images down a little better, but I think I got the order a little mixed up, sorry about that.
Great work! I love box art builds. |

Those kits were always a challenge and the big tires made them look toy like. With a few changes and some new tires and a little scratch building you have turned it into a wonderful race car. Something anyone would be proud to have on their shelf. Great job. |

Thanks for the kind words! Just a little cranking from my soap box: So many people have always complained about the tires, but believe it or not, the rims scale EXACTLY 15" in diameter and the tires are well within the range of sizes that were used here in the northeast. They scale out (after sanding to remove the shine and concave tread) to almost exactly 100" in circumference, there were tires used in the '70s that were well north of 100"! I understand that other areas of the country never went this big, but to me they are perfect. My 1:1 vintage modified uses modern dirt tires that measure into the 90" area for the right rear. |

Spooker I had heard that the tires used in some Northern modified circuits scale out to what the larger tires on the AMT stockers measured. I guess it was an area think because I don't remember tires being that big around here in Virginia. I guess tires were different everywhere. A buddy of mine and I built a car many, many, years ago and had to run street tires. we got ours from Sears. Still you have produced a beautiful model. |

It looks beautiful with these funky sixties colors. The aftermarket tires you have selected makes it look just right.

Like what you did with the side and rear "nerf" bars. what are they glued to inside?
Really makes them look real!! _________________ Ed. K |

Thanks, Ed! I just drilled an oversized hole in the body, like you would do on a real car, glued a scrap of sheet plastic inside it, and after painting the body, I painted the resulting recess flat black, then glued in the nerf bar. I'm planning on building all nine of the series, using modern paints and some techniques like the nerf bar trick to make them look more realistic, but no expensive aftermarket stuff (except maybe tires) and not a lot of extra detailing, just a good, clean build with a few scratch-built or parts box items added. |

I know we discussed it before - but some of us might remember a car model magazine article from back in the day that covered some detailing mods - like the windshield screen, and adding tread to the tires. _________________ Bill Jobson is my real name. |

Bill..
Still have that issue of Car Model.....
Couple of things i did from that article at the time was using the lowered holes for the metl axles and witching the front and rear "bars".
It was the reason I bought the '65 Fairlane version.
Was one of the 1st two models that I painted as it was being built..... _________________ Ed. K |
