|
When I started building 4 years ago one of my first projects was this:
[url
Beginner atempting brush painting a black and gold car...man was it ugly!
It never made it to the display cabinet...and made it in and out of the trash bin a few times.
Lately I striped and sanded the body. I'd like to salvage it into this:
[/url
Starting with this pile of parts...and these decals of uncertain quality...
[url
[/url
Let's see if it makes it to the display cabinet or ends up in the trash for good.
Gentlemen, make your bets !
Stay tuned for updates _________________ "When you arrive at a fork in the road, take it" - Yogi Berra |

I see your decals are yellowed. They may be brittle and even breakup. lobographix makes a great decal for that car and it is reasonable also. Good luck. |

I usually buy from Mikes who ships in Canada. Do you know where I can get Lobo Graphic decals?
thanks. _________________ "When you arrive at a fork in the road, take it" - Yogi Berra |

Pierre, great to see you have a wip going for your Junior build. You might try putting the decals in some sunlight for a couple of days to see if the yellow goes away. I have never tryed this myself, so I dont know if it works or not. If it does, then put a coat of future on them and see if they work . Or just get the lobo graphics. Probably a lot less trouble. |

Thank you for the advice. I just coat the whole sheet with Future? This is to reduce the risk of breaking them I assume, and then I will have to cut around each decal individually right? _________________ "When you arrive at a fork in the road, take it" - Yogi Berra |

You dont have to do the whole sheet just make sure each decal is covered, and yes you will have to cut them out on their edge because you will have a clear border to where you cut them at, if that makes sense. |

So starting on this re-build, I chose to start with painting the body. I want to test these decals before I am too far ahead on other work.
[url
Painted Vallejo off-white over Vallejo white primer.
Starting with the chassis, I chose to leave the front alone and focus on transformation of the rear to long arm setup.
I found a broken Monogram setup in my graveyard
[/url
I used as reference the RK Motors video where JJ stands under his old car and explains how he built it
First step: rebuild the broken axle
[url
Then on to the rear suspension components, using video as reference.
[/url
Then on to fabricating the attachment pieces to the vehicle frame and test fitting
[url
The panhard rod and attachment I still need to do
Checking for ride height. Aiming for a flat stance, as low as tires and axle to underfloor restrictions will allow:

Coming along nicely, Pierre. Stance looks perfect. Chassis looks correct. You're using a great reference tool with that RK video. |

Wanted to do the decals early in the refurbish process because of the doubts I had about them.
The JNJ decals survived...or rather I survived the decals...barely!
They have some yellowing and the backing sheet was leaving gummy residues on the back side of the decals as I lifted them.
Out of desperation I put them back in the water bowl after taking them off the paper and gently brushed both sides.
The result is OK but not exciting.
Anyhow, what's done is done, but I now feel less excited about this project

Thanks for the link Bill,
I e-mailed them with an inquiry a few days ago but they have not responded. I decided to go ahead with the decals I had. Not ideal but acceptable. _________________ "When you arrive at a fork in the road, take it" - Yogi Berra |

There is a bit depending on light condition. Not obvious though. I will move on with the build. I just hope that now that decals are set and sealed they will stay like that. _________________ "When you arrive at a fork in the road, take it" - Yogi Berra |

I'm with Mark Pierre...that decal job looks very good!! Did you lay down any clear coat on them after applying them to the body? That will make sure they don't go anywhere...just thinking here... _________________ Short Track racing....Ya gotta love it.

Slow progress lately but I got a bit done on the interior. I taped up the steering wheel with 1 mm masking tape.
I also finished taking the Yunik roll cage and applying mods to better reflect Junior's design.
For my next act I will attempt to scratch build a 4 point seatbelt. I've never tried it and I don't have a clue how to do it.
If you see something again from me it will be seat belts. If you don't, I've failed and possibly gone mental trying...

It's looking good Pierre. If you're going to use Detail master buckles..you might want to invest a few bucks on a photo etch bender. They work pretty good. You can also go to Pro Tech and pick up a few sets from Charlie. They are easy to assemble. I use his buckles on almost all of my builds. Here's a link to his site...

You can look at the different Photo etch benders here...

Your Chevy is coming along nicely. The decals look fine, can't see any yellowing.
I also see how great minds think alike:

Strangely similar. Dedicated racing kits are nice but I always go back to sixties road car kits that require all these mods to turn them into race cars. That's where the real fun is! _________________ "When you arrive at a fork in the road, take it" - Yogi Berra |

Thanks for the tips sir. I like the Detail Master lever type harness which looks more period correct for this project and easier to acquire here in Canada.
That would be the easy way...the rational way...
But I got this crazy idea to do this myself...
No worries going mental...might be there already!

Starting on the belts. This is the style I will try to emulate. It won't be a 5 point, just a 4 point
[url
And this is the material I plan to use: 26 gauge craft wire, thin sheet styrene, thick foil from a pie dish, 1/4 inch masking tape and good'ol crazy glue.

Starting with one of the lap belt buckles, using tweezers to shape the wire, then glue on strip of styrene:
[url
More bending and cutting of the wire to create the belt attachment loop:
[/url
Trimming excess styrene and looping in some masking tale simulating the end piece of the belt:
[url
Same process for the other buckle. This will be the back side unseen as it will rest on the seat:
[/url
Seen here further along.
I have added a 90 deg bend on the guide loop side and using 0.8 mm styrene rod for the release lever support.
The lever itself is next to it made of craft wire
[url
Same type of process for shoulder belt attachments
The first 4 elements of the system displayed together:

They look Awesome, Pierre. A lot more authentic then mine with the use of the wire.
I just tryed to make something quick to fill up the seat so something would be there. Does anyone actually make a p.e. sixty's 4 point harness? Seems like it would have to come in pieces that would have to be assembled. |

Good, Pierre. Looks like a lot of bending and assembly required on those. I'll be glad to see what you do with a set of those to see how they look when completed. If you could do another tutorial putting those together it would be very helpful to see if I want to order any. |

Progress from 2 days ago. I refinished the IP panel.
Not great but it was pretty rough to start with. Color is my own mix of brown, gold and metal medium.
I tried something new for the gauges. Powerslide decals as usual but I wrapped craft wire around a 2.4mm tube to make the rings.
[url
The other parts pretty much done. Chassis is complete with addition of cobbled up shocks, panhard rod and refinish of the engine/trans.
[/url
Seat belts crazy glued to seat

The belts look great, Pierre. Yeah, you can get more precise with the PE materials, but there's a real charm to what you have created on your own.
And at that scale - and with the diminishing eyesight of those who will truly appreciate this - no one is going to demand perfection. |

I agree. I just might give it a go again with improvements of the adjusters which don't look right. I would use MarkJ's method for those. _________________ "When you arrive at a fork in the road, take it" - Yogi Berra |

Pierre, if you do my adjusters, make the little caddy fins a little shorter and round off the corners on them a bit. I was going to do it but got in too big a hurry like I do sometimes, and when I realized it, it was too late. Love what you came up with for the guages. I need to try that if i can. Sometimes the fingers cant do what the mind wants them to do, in my case. It's tough to get old. |
