I've been cleaning up some of my models lately (I have open shelves with no dust protection) and I thought some of you, uh, younger guys might appreciate this.

This is, obviously, a Richard Petty Road Runner. It is a JoHan kit built pretty much straight out of the box. If you notice the yellowing around the decals that's because I built this in the very early '70s. Probably around '71 or '72. That makes this model nearly 50 years old.

JoHan kits in those days were very basic and this model still has the stock, street exhaust system and all of the suspension molded in. The kit did come with a basic roll cage and a "racing dash" but that's pretty much it. Paint is most likely Testors Light Blue from a spray can and flat black for the top. The decals are from the kit.

So that's how we did things back then. Hope you enjoyed seeing this little shot of the past. (Oh, and this is not the oldest model in my collection)

Very cool blast from the past. It sure looks good for it's age. That's a testament to your painting skills back in the day.

Thanks for showing the model. Got a couple of the same model built in the time period you did and still have an unopened one. Never built the Daytona cars with black and white tops but they are on the to do list!

Best thing I have seen on a model forum in awhile! I love looking at old builds, especially of others and see how the "other guys" got it done.

very clean and crisp modeling there! Who cares about the stock exhaust, I can't see it in your photo.

PS- Can I post my period Hamilton Superbird? Yellow decals and all!

Thanks for the notes, I built this thing when I was a teen ager....loved that car and JoHan has the best proportions as they worked directly with the OEM's on the models.

thing is we need a Torino built back then, to make it 3 years of the King when cars looked cool and all....

Since we're on the subject, here are my two JoHan Superbirds. Built around the same time as the Road Runner at the top.
