In 1969 was the #88 Dodge Daytona that Buddy Baker set the enclosed track speed record in, the same #88 Dodge Daytona that Charlie Glotzbach ran a qualifying lap of 199.466 mph for the first Talladega 500? If so was the car light blue when Glotzbach qualified the car? |

Yes and I think so, although the number style was more like the number style on the #99 car when it made its pole run. Member odcics2 would be able to say for sure on the color. I've been thinking about doing the decals for the pole run car. |

It was "Petty Blue" from the time they painted over the B-5, late August, 1969, until Don White put yellow over it in the beginning of 1971.
The numbers in Sept. 1969 at Talladega were simple white, not stylized like the #99.
Right side had black outline, other side didn't!!
In addition to Baker & Glotzbach, Allison, Isaac, Hylton, Goldsmith and Gurnet drove the car during various tests when Chrysler owned it.
It also won at least 4 times when Don White owned it from 1971 on. |

Ok Tom, looks like several of us need decals. What if we pay inadvance to help get the paper. |

odcics2 was kind enough to share these photos of DC-93 being lettered and making its pole run. I've seen the photos but these are higher-quality images than I had seen before. You can see the outline present around the numbers being applied to the passenger side the grandstand sees, the driver's side didn't get outlined. It was an eventful few days at Talladega, and 1-shot dries at the same rate no matter how rushed the painter is.

I found these pics earlier this week and this is what got me researching the car. Thanks for posting them. And decals...… |

I believe the car when it ran the 200 mph. Lap did not have a number on the drivers side.

100% correct. And the "88" painted on was different than the '69 Talladega look.
Only a few sponsor stickers.... Black Goodyears on fender and wing.
Scat Pack on wing.
Hurst, Champion, Union and IR on the fenders.
The IR said "Power Tools" under the logo, NOT professional tools!!
There was the silver backed "Dodge" right above the black air intake on the nose. Front spoiler is natural aluminum.
The "Dodge" on the 1/4 panel was painted silver, along with the roof 88 and pass door.
The back panel had "88" on both sides with "Charger" in the middle.
Whiter with yellow outlines.

odcics2 shared more photos of both the pole run car and the 200 MPH run version of DC-93.
Hood lettering for the pole run version
Contingencies as photographed the day after the 200 MPH run:
Trunk hinges drilled for weight removal:
Gurney testing at Riverside in Dec. 1969:
Interior was B5 Blue, left satin finished:
Note the snap-on carpeting on the tunnel and the visible tubing of the chassis X-brace in the floor:

You are welcome.

Interior color and chassis was always B-7 blue. Underhood, firewall and engine bars got the Petty Blue when the exterior was painted, beginning of Sept. 1969.
Note the droop of the front clip, starting over the front wheels going forward. Also, the slight 1/4 panel flare from the rear of the door to the tire opening. The 1/4 is pulled out AND down! |

I'd like proof of the "Petty" blue. I don't believe for a second that they shared that color with another team for whatever reason, especially since it was such a closely guarded secret for so long. _________________ "Dude, it's not Camelot... it's only a model." "Details man, I need details!!" |

I hear you. I would think it would be Chrysler's corporate Blue (like their logo) which Nichels had used on the earlier Goldsmith Plymouths. _________________ Bill Jobson is my real name. |

I do seem to remember that the Woodward Superbird was Petty blue (or so close I couldn't tell the difference) in the couple of color pics I've seen of it.

I don't know about grabber but, Basin street has been revived in recent years on the Jeep Chief, called of all things, Chief Blue. _________________ "Dude, it's not Camelot... it's only a model." "Details man, I need details!!" |

So to Confirm as its a little confusing -
Pole winning car in 1969 - White 88 on the drivers door with no outline. White 88 on passenger door with outline
200mph car in 1970 - Silver 88 with yellow outline on passenger side door. No 88 at all on the drivers door.
Is this correct? Also can anyone confirm roof & trunk numbers?
Im wanting to build these cars in 1/25 soon. |

Correct on door numbers.
Roof and trunk silver for 200 run. Hard to tell if there is a yellow outline.
At Talledega in 69, I don't see nose, roof or decklid numbers on the pic above. |

Closely guarded secret?? LOL!
The 69 Road Runner was available in a "999" special order paint code which was "Petty Blue". Chrysler had the "formula".
Side by side, Corporate Blue is darker than Petty Blue.
But, I don't know much, just worked for Chrysler 37 years and own the #88 which has original parts painted Petty Blue. |

From board member Runnernut2: In 1966 or 1967. Chrysler Corporation did sell Plymouth Belvederes marketed in the South that were painted "Petty Blue." It might of been a regional deal, but they were Petty Blue. |

Lets not forget that SuperBirds were available with the "999" paint code also.
I believe that 50 were built with "The Kings" color !! |
