There have been lots of opinions, both pro and con on the Salvinos kits so I'll leave all that for other posts. My own personal opinion is that the '81 Pontiac LeMans is their best effort yet.
This is the LeMans that Alison drove on the '81 Daytona 500.
I used a Monogram chassis instead of the kit only because I had one already started and that saved me some time. I also used Monogram tires because I think they look a little better. I lowered the suspension just a little too.
I did shorten the front end of the body and reshaped the quarter windows making the 'C' pillar thinner and that helped a lot. The roof may be a tad bit too tall but I'll leave that for somebody with more talent than I have to fix.
Paint is Tamiya X-1 Gloss Black and XF-16 Flat Aluminum followed by a couple coats of X-22 Clear Gloss to provide a base for the decals. Decals are from Powerslide.
I built the Buick decades ago and it is all Monogram, of course, and is completely hand lettered. I cut the numbers out of chrome Mylar tape and the rest is all Sign Painters One Shot paint.
Again, I think overall, that the Salvinos Lemans is entirely more workable than any of their other kits I've seen so far and I just may do another one! _________________ Still crazy after all these years. |

I forgot to include the obligatory chassis shot.
This is the correct for this car Mike Laughlin front steer chassis. I used the exhaust from a later Monogram kit rather than the incorrect 180 degree headers that have been in the first generation Monogram kits since the beginning. Everything else is just paint-detailed.
Interesting story about the LeMans from the May 1981 issue of Stock Car Racing magazine. When Waddell Wilson and Harry Rainier discovered that the LeMans had been approved and was legal for NASCAR they decided that's what they would take to Daytona. They couldn't find a two-door body anywhere because GM had built mostly four-door cars first. This was December of 1980. So they got a Chevy Malibu, which used the same body, and grafted the Pontiac nose on. So this car actually started out as a Chevrolet. _________________ Still crazy after all these years. |

Thank you. I do think the Oldsmobile and the Monte Carlo had really poor chassis in them. Just way off. But I like this one and think it was worth the effort. _________________ Still crazy after all these years. |

Excellent as always, Drew. Always loved your tips in scale auto. Sad that they are gone. |
