|
|
I'm looking to do a '68 Torino build and the resident engine is the 427.
I have the Polar Lights Talladoogies of Petty and Pearson and the Mercury Spoiler II of Cale that all offer a 427 engine option. But none show any part or placement for the coolant overflow tank for that engine.
Any suggestions where such an item can be had are gratefully appreciated. |

Some of the older Fords such as Galaxies, had an expansion tank that came off the front of the intake where the thermostat would go. That was on street cars, not sure about race cars. _________________ I bleed Ford blue! |

You got it, Pontiac.
That's the exact item I was mentioning. Not exactly an easy item to find in kits or with third-party resin marketers.
And that's the exact car I'm looking to build. Probably a call for custom decals. Hello, Polecat. |

Polar Lights makes a kit for this car.
I think I have a set of Fred Cady decals...let me check. See if these will work.

I don't think the overflow tank is in the Polar Lights kit but it is in the 69 AMT Torino stock kit. |

I think its in all the 69 Torino kits. Mine all have the Red Torino on the box except for a couple but I think it's in them also. Might be in the 65/66 Galaxie but not sure. Ned Jarrett ran the expansion tank on his 65 Galaxie. It was use on most of the Ford Stock cars through the sixties with the 427. Tom Moody or Dr. Craft probably knows for sure |

You are correct Sir! The Galaxie kits do have the tank |

Nay, laddie. Polar Lights and Fred Cady are all about the '69 Torino Cobra/Talladega. It's the '68 I'm looking to do. PL doesn't offer the overflow tank with its 427 option and no one makes decals for it. And that's because the '68 Torino is a very hard-to-find kit nowadays.
So many great past champions' cars - '51, '54, '58, '59, '61, '63, and '68 - but the options to build them vary widely, from near impossible ('54, Chrysler New Yorker) to fairly easy ('51 Hudson, '61 Chev Bel Air). Very few offerings from decal makers to let us build them. |

What am I missing here?
The 68 and 69 Torino's are so similar. Can't you use the 69 model and make it a 68 very easily? _________________ I bleed Ford blue! |

Hart resin parts make a very nice front grille and rear bumper for the 68 Torino. If you are doing a stock car you will need to remove the Ford crest in the front grille. The interior for the stock Torino is also a little different. Yesterday made decals for the Bobby Allison Torino probably hard to find. Isn't the marker lights and grille the only difference on the exterior between the 68 and 69 ? |

Bangerboy if it's the tank your looking for it comes in the Revell Monogram parts pack of the 427 engine. It builds up to decent engine as well.
Check e-bay ,or I could part with one of mine.

Onre item missing is that Ford 427 engines ran in 1957 and 68 had a dual 4 barrel tunnel port intake and heads. The heads look the same outwardly but the intake is quite different.

I have two different AMT '68 Torino kits - one pre-built in race mode, the other in the box with options for street or race - and they each offer the two-carb options. With matching racing mode air cleaners. And dry sumps!
But thanks for pointing this out. I'm just getting everything together and this helps. I sure don't have headers to match what you're showing in those pictures. |

Thanks, Ron. May take you up on that offer. One of my '68 kits has it, the other doesn't. Rooting through the stash to see what else I have but pressed for time. Cottage country calls. Time to launch the boat - a classic '80 Glastron Carlson CVZ(ed) 19.

The oil pan is not a dry sump but a flattened out, wide pan for high capacity. The Boss 429 had the first dry sump system used in NASCAR. The headers were single layer to allow more ground clearance and similar ones were made for the Boss 429.
I used the manifold from a 60 Ford kit for this engine in a 68 Mercury. Not totally correct but good details.
