|
|
So if I wanted to do the car body entirely in flat black or satin black, (think #78 Denver Mattress) after I apply decals, won't the area or "edge" around the decals be a glossy black?
How do I achieve an entire satin black body with no gloss except the decals?
Anyone done a flat black car? |

i wrapped up the #39 Army Impala not to long ago using MPRs decal set...
cutting the decal as close to the print as possible is one trick...
most of the high end current art shouldn't need to be trimmed close... _________________

Won't decal set help with that too? I have some I put on 20 years ago, although on gloss paint, that were hard as heck to get off. _________________ I bleed Ford blue! |

You can probably do this as long as the paint surface is smooth. It can still be flat or satin without a lot of texture to the paint. You may need to use a lot of decal solvent, I do this with aircraft and armour models. |

I would paint the body with a gloss black, then top that with a Dull coat clear. The base would be smooth as well as the clear. Smooth but not glossy if that makes sense. Testors produced the Dull coat you would need. _________________ life is hard, it's harder when you're stupid. John Wayne |

Have you done this?
I tried it once and for me it did not come out that good... _________________ Matt |

Yep. Sprayed Testors Black, let it cure for a week. Sprayed Testors Dull coat over it. Worked great. I built an old short tra k Chevelle that had a flat black hood and header panel. I was happy with it. _________________ life is hard, it's harder when you're stupid. John Wayne |

That's the way I would do it too. Flat black by itself isn't smooth enough for the decals to lay down properly. |

any way you try it the decals will silver if you lay them down over a flat or dullcote. your best bet is to use a semi gloss or gloss clear over the flat black and then decal. i use the testors glosscote over flat black to do the trailing arms and rear axle on my nascar builds and it comes out as a semi gloss. someone had suggested to me to use future under where the decals are to go but how do you apply it only under the decal?
