Started this one a long time ago as an experiment. I wanted to come up with a way to improve the old AMT/Model King '72 Monte Carlo without spending a lot of money, mainly wanted to improve the interior and roll cage area. I used to build detailed, complete NASCAR cars but with the number that I'd like to build, it just isn't time efficient. So this was intended as a shelf model from the start. Goal was nice paint and decals, good stance, decent interior. I used the AMT chassis WITHOUT the interior pan. I installed an old Monogram T-bird roll cage, the GM version didn't fit as well (the Ford didn't really fit either). Some bits from the Monte, more bits (seat, dash, cooler) from the Ford. AMT tires on MPC rims. These were the first of Tom M.'s excellent Ol' Days sheets I've used. I consider the experiment a failed one as the work involved was WAY too much. Next Monte will get a scratchbuilt cage, should go much quicker. I was hoping to find a use for all the worthless Monogram kits I have, but oh well! This car sat on the outside pole at the 9/29/74 Martinsville Cup race, led 79 laps before crashing out on lap 150. Here you go:

(Didn't want to waste P/E belts so I grabbed some plastic belts from the parts box and used some wire and plastic bits to do the best I could)

Thanks all! I have a few more Montes to do, they will all get scratchbuilt cages, probably build a couple of jigs to speed things up.

Looks awesome. Really like the Seat belt harnesses and hardware, and does the ingenious front axle set up allow the front wheels to roll?

Absolutely beautiful job! You nailed it at EVERY level.
I got to watch Hutchins race quite a few times and he definitely a "take no prisoners" sort of driver.

I am a big Sonny Hutchins fan. Awesome build. What color did you use? I have several sets of those decals, did you use the extra white backing or not? Again, very nice rendition of that car. Don ..deadhorse

I used the paint Tom recommended, Bonnet Blue. I DID use the white underlay decals, but I don't think they were really necessary on this light color. HTH!

I didn't think they were necessary either, but this was the first sheet I printed off the white laser. And not everyone uses the decals to build the car like the artwork was done for, so I include the underlays just to be safe.
