What was the "second" car you owned?

Mine was a 1969 Chevy Impala...4 door....350/4BBl...maroon with a black vinyl top. I so wish I had it back.....it got traded on a brand new 76 Nova which was a lousy car. That 305 was junk......

84 Ford Ranger manual everything as well with a moon roof. Rebuilt the carb on a hot summer day and it ended up catching fire. After putting it out with water and replacing the burned hoses and line it started up and run for about 6 more years. Smile

1976 Chevrolet c10 step side. Rosedale red with gold and white pinstriping that followed the character lines. Burgundy vinyl interior. Shag carpet headliner with a sunroof. Cragar SS all the way around mounted on CBI wide 60s on the back and 70s on the front. 8 track player I thought I was the stuff. Old man got drunk and wrecked it. Paint never matched where the repairs were made. Had to have a new front clip minus one fender. Traded it for a 1977 Olds 442. Wish i still had them both.

1994 Ford Probe. 2 liter 4 banger with a 5 speed manual trans. One of the best and most reliable cars i ever owned, aside from one factory recall i never had a bit of work done to it aside from scheduled maintenance- did the oil changes, tune ups and brakes myself. Loved that car, my first car bought brand new and i put over 100k miles on it in less than 5 years.

My 2nd car was my 66 Mustang 2+2.......I wrote about it back on 2/5......here is what I wrote.......

2/5/75 was a good day for me. I opened the newspaper and saw Young Ford in Charlotte NC had two Mustangs listed in their used car lot. As soon as I could I went down to look. A 1973 base model sportsroof 3 speed 240 6 cyl or a 66 2+2 289 4 spd. I'm sure we all know which one I wanted. I was yet 18 so I had to talk the salesman into taking a $10 bill as a deposit to hold the 66 until I could get my Dad down to the dealership.

As soon as Dad got home from work I asked him to go with me to Young Ford and 'look' at the car. I think Dad was tired of me always using his Pinto wagon so he was open to going down to look at it. The 66 had $950 on the windshield, Dad got them down to $900 if he'd write a check tonight and we'd drive it off. The deal was done. We went into the office to get the paperwork done. When we came back out, a short time, a employee had backed the car into another on the lot. It pushed in the left rear fender and trim piece. Dad was not happy.....and now Young had a old car that was wrecked. Dad was ready to walk when the sales guy said 'If I give you $300 cash will you take it anyway??' Dad looked at me and I said yes! So I had a 1966 Mustang, slightly bent, for $600. Dad thought it was a bad deal.....today it has turned out OK!! (I still have the bill of sale)

That Saturday I asked a buddy of mine's sister to go and see W W and the Dixie Dancekings. She said yes. Not sure it was me or the Mustang but either way I was OK!!! No tagging along in someone else's car. She never went out with anyone else again. Today we are married 41 years.....and will still have that car. Again, me or the car?? All our kids have grown up in the car. It was my daily driver until 1986.

In 2015 we decided to restore the 66. Had some bad luck, false starts and set backs.....normal for a project this big. Yesterday I took the 66 out for a drive. I knew was going to rain all day the 5th but Monday was 58 degrees and sunny.....so I took the anniversary ride when I could. Feb 5 1975, 45 years ago Wednesday, was one of my better days.........

1966 Pontiac Lemans 2 door post car. 389 tri power with 4 speed.
Pale yellow with black bucket seat interior.
Had 5 inch wide chrome steel wheels on front and 10 inch reversed chrome slots on back with N50 15 Sticky Micky's on rear.
Headers with the old canister style Thrush muffles.

1986 Chevy Spectrum. My wife and I were married only about 6 months and were both trying to get our careers started in low paying jobs. My 75 Matador finally had the repair we did not want to make and we traded the car off.

With the scarcity of AMC's, I wish we would have been able to keep the car, but hindsight is 20 / 20.

1963 Chevy Impala Super Sport. Had a 327 and a powerglide which I changed out with a 4 speed from the junk yard. Paid 900 bucks for the car in 1969. The 4 speed didn't help much. In retrospect I wished I had kept the powerglide.

Geez had so many back in the day. But it would of been one of these and I dont know if bikes count. Would of been 67 chrysler 500, 67 caddy fleetwood brougham, 69 de ville , or the 73 triumph hard tail chopper.

1960 Morris Minor Woodie van. had a great time doing a complete make over on it.
I drove it home sitting on a minor bucket due to the front seat being only the metal bar of the bucket seat.

This is what it looked like before I painted it white and put triple red stripes down the middle ala Ray Fox. I also put a wooden spoiler on the deck lid which looked totally out of place. That's my parents house in the background built in 1962.

My second car was a hand-me-down 1983 Olds Delta 88 Royale Brougham. The paint was shot, it was a little underpowered with the 307, but it had power everything and that car rode like a big ol' cloud out on the road. It was exactly what you'd expect in a car that had Dick Van Patten as its spokesman. I still smile when I think about that car.

I still own my 84 olds. have owned about 10 of these 4 at the same time at one point. everyone including all the cops new the house. it was considered a safe house for kids to go to if they thought trouble around or parents didnt pick them up. school was right across the street and wife still works there been 20 yrs almost. also always had a bunch of kids there. our 2 plus the whole neighborhood. some day need to post a pick of some of the kids.

A brand new Dark Blue 1983 Monte Carlo SS !!! Lotsa rare deals on that car. The only year of the 3 - speed turbo 250 transmission; the only year you could NOT have bucket seats & console - they wanted to get them built
FAST -- for NASCAR approval; 1983 & '84 the only years of the white & blue interior with SS logos on the headrests; also the only years of the blue exterior color and the same striping & graphics regardless of exterior color.
I had lotsa fun with that car, especially in car - crazy SoCal. So many street runners thought it was just a rims ( off the S-10 ! ) & paint job like the Hurst Olds; the 305 H.O. engine soon taught them otherwise. I recall racing a late 1970's Corvette up Arroyo Seco on the Pasadena Freeway. He could pull me on the straights - I could catch him in the corners. The car got caught up in my parent's divorce Crying or Very sad . Still wish I had it now...

68 Chevelle SS 396, 325 HP, Forest Green. It was the first new car my dad had ever bought. My dad let me drive it all through college. Gave me this car as a wedding present. Got married in 1970. Previously had drive a 56 Metropolitan it was, maybe the worst car I had ever owned.

Well I guess this will show my age my second car was a 1962 Chrysler 300H I was working at a Pontiac Cadillac dealership and it came in on trade in 1969 they could not sell it for some reason might have been the 2 4 barrels so I got it for $600.00 dollars and I had just finished a repaint on my 1961 Plymouth Fury 2 door hardtop.. so yes I was a MOPAR Nut back then to...

1957 Plymouth Fury. The car was painted a mix of Ford Emberglo and some Pontiac metallic brown. It was painted a week before I bought it by a guy that built hot rods and later owned a speed shop.

The engine was a 1961 Dodge Commando 383 with the shorter version of the long ram. 2 Carter AFB carbs good for maybe 5 mpg. Transmission was a beefed Torque Flite and it usually broke 10 inch slicks loose going between first and second gear. It was a very hard, fast shift between all the gears and could smoke regular tires for blocks when you so desired.

It was a very fun car. The day I picked it up and parked it next to the building where I was working after school and when I got off work, well after dark, I started it up and it backfired through carbs without air cleaners and flames shot through the 4 rows of louvers on the hood. Quite scary. The guys that built the car didn't think the air cleaners would fit but they were in the trunk and I put them on the next day and they fit fine.

The car surprised a lot of Chevy and Ford owners. From a slight roll it would really take off and leave most in the wake.

The problem was u-joints and drive shafts. It broke so many that I always carried a spare ready to bolt on, in the trunk. I could swap it out at pit stop speed, I had a lot of practice. The last time I drove it, I broke the yoke off the rear end and retired the car. I had had enough of the break downs.

My second car (truck) was a 1977 F250 supercab. It wasn't much of a looker with the faded red paint, dents and scratches but drove like a dream.

1969 Ford Fairlane 500 2-door hardtop (not fastback). Black with turquoise interior, Magnum 500 wheels, just enough polished stainless trim to accent the black body. Had a 302/C4 when I got it, but swapped in a 390/C6 a few years later with a Ford 3-2v intake/carb setup I managed to latch onto.

Sure wish I had that one back! Recently picked up a resin hardtop body and a '69 Cobra kit to build a scale recreation of it.

Second car was a 1974 Cougar XR-7, Maize green with a dark green Landau roof and dark green interior. 351 4 bbl. automatic with about every option offered except a sunroof. Car was a wedding present from my wife's grandparents or otherwise, it wouldn't have been Maize green:(
Traded it in '78 for the "newly redesigned" '78 Toyota Celica. (I thought they looked "Mercedes-ish) Should have held onto the Cougar a couple more years while they worked the bugs out the the "newly redesigned" Celica. The 20R engine was bulletproof but the car fell apart around it!

1983 Subaru Loyale. Bought used in 1987 for about $2500. Great AWD system that could handle snow and ice comfortably. The engine was 1.8L and great on gas. Back seats folded flat and could carry plenty of cargo.

The first of 8 Subaru wagons I've owned. All of them have passed 200,000 miles and worked well. My mechanics have often admired the build quality. Driving an '09 Outback today. I once drove to Buffalo in the midst of a winter storm that dropped 35 inches in 24 hours. I got into Buffalo. More importantly, I got out and back home. That was me sold on them.

That's an interesting story. A friend of mine had bought a '66 Tempest with the base 1 barrel OHC-6 and the 2 speed Pontiac version of the Powerglide. He was always hard on vehicles (I loaned him my ramp truck one time to rescue his wife's car when it had broken down, he called me to come get him because he broke an axle in my ramp truck...) and he managed to burn two pistons in that poor Tempest one night. He moved on to another car and gave the Tempest to his younger brother who was around 14 at the time. His brother and I diagnosed it and the brother decided he didn't want to invest a lot of money into a rusty base 6 cylinder Tempest. He bought a '66 LeMans with a 326 and was going to junk the Tempest. I was always fascinated by those OHC-6 Pontiac engines so I helped him to tow it to my backyard instead. I pulled the engine, cleaned out all the sludge and neglect, repaired the damage, did a quickie rebuild, and got it running. I had found a factory 4 barrel setup for it so I put it back together with the 4 barrel and factory split exhaust, it ran so well that I wanted to do something with the body. I had finished it in November, as soon as it got warm enough (late March on the Mississippi Gulf coast) I found the bones of a '66 GTO in my local used auto parts emporium. It was missing the front cap (which was usable from my Tempest), the driver's door (which I had to scrounge, since my Tempest was a post car) and the front seats. I think it cost me $50 to buy it and have them tow it to my house. The GTO body was Montero Red, my Tempest which supplied the front cap was Burgundy Poly, and the driver's door I scrounged was Barrier Blue. It looked like it had been built by Johnny Cash but it ran well and I used it as a daily driver for around a year and a half. I eventually sold it to build my first Street Stock but it was a learning experience and it was fun.

You have to remember this was during the gas crunch and musclecars were not in high demand at the time. Besides the Eliminator, I was also looking at a 68 Shelby GT-500 KR convertible at Town and Country Ford. Picked the Eliminator because it was cheaper and also newer. Asking price on the Shelby? 2800 dollars!
