Why did some of the Falcon funny cars ( Daddy Warbucks for example) have fuel tank mounted on front of car?

Weight distribution is the only reason I can think of. May help keep the front of the car planted on launch.

They used mechanical pumps mounted to the front of the engine so they needed the fuel source close to the pump.

A small fuel tank was quite popular among drag racers of the era. Gassers, altereds, rails, etc. and most any other drag racer that was not production car based and restricted by rules from locating the fuel tank up front.

Stock class, Super Stock, and little else would NOT have placed a small fuel tank up front.

An aluminum gas tank, like a "Moon tank" weighs in the neighborhood of 6-8lbs. 2 gallons of gasoline weighs about 12lbs. So the weight is not a big chunk in the front. But it DOES make sense to help the fuel travel to the fuel pump and engine under hard acceleration.

Running mechanical fuel injection, the tank needs to be reasonably close to the pump for the return line back to the tank for the excess fuel.

Uh yeah, yes and no. Not so terribly much. Sprint cars of the era have the fuel tank in back and the fuel pump driven off the front of the cam. Not very far away, but still...

NHRA rules also stated that wherever possible, fuel tanks must be ahead of the engine
