|
|
I see the Buddy Baker Circus Circus 78 Monte Carlo #27 will be out shortly. Lets not get a big thing going again about the Salvino kits please it is just not worth it. All I wanted to say is the kit will be run and available shortly from the info I have. I actually don't remember this car, Can anyone provide any info on it was it a one race deal? I am assuming it was just another race car in the MC Anderson Stable that Buddy drove for I think 2 years. |

hemiman, the Circus Circus sponsorship was a one race deal for the Nov. '78 race at Ontario. Buddy started 8th and finished 4th. He drove for M.C. in 1978 only and I think only about a dozen or so races.

I say let the conversations continue. Adam and Dave have put up some good info for those that want a really accurate build.
For those that want a box build it can be done. I've seen some beautiful Olds builds on facebook. |

Wondering if this photo was taken at Ontario Motor Speedway ??? It would have been the closest NASCAR race to Las Vegas at the time. Also the car is turning left, there isn't much banking, and Circus Circus PR man Mel Larsen was a big NASCAR supporter ( and sometimes a driver too ). |

Leave off the Circus Circus decals and you have the car from the majority of the season. It's good marketing by Salvino's. I did that with the Allison 72 Monte Carlo recently from AMT......decals for 5 versions in one kit......makes the kit a better value and hope a better buy. |

For '78, M.C. went to a darker blue on his cars than the baby blue that he ran with Sam Sommers in '76 and most of '77. For '79 and '80 (Benny) the cars were sometimes the original baby blue and less often, the darker blue shown above and possibly a darker variant than that. R.J. is right, the box art pic was taken at the Los Angeles Times 500 at Ont. in Nov. '78.
Dave is right also, you could do several cars with just the addition (or deletion) of the quarter sponsors or the default "M.C. Anderson Inc." that was usually there when no other sponsor was involved. There was a lot of one-time deals with sponsors like TV/Radio stations (Atlanta), a suntan product, and a lot more I can't remember:)

The kit if it's like the Allison kit should have both square and round header panels included. As to what year the racecar was supposed to be I don't know round or square headlights I think the car ran in 78 which according to NASCARs rules at the time I think it had to be square but that's just my thoughts on it others may know more hopefully they can fill us in. |

just put this up on the web store, shipping mid March. The square headlight Monte Carlo

I copied and pasted the above from their facebook page. It's their comment beside the picture of the new kit.
Odd that they'd get it wrong. |

I think the year they use for the box art is the year the car raced, not the actual year of the body style. |

Several cars of note in the link :
Richard Petty's #43 Monte Carlo is the same car he " Broke " his winless streak in, though technically it was at the Winston West race in Phoenix the next weekend.
The # 51 Buick was run by Winston West regular Jim Thirkettle; the # 22 was Ray Elder in a DODGE Magnum; the # 8 was Ed Negre in a Chrysler CORDOBA !!! |

And Dale Earnhardt in the #98 Kelly Girl MC. Osterlund had Jimmy Insolo start the car and run to the first caution to protect Dale's rookie status for '79.

Speaking of which, if any of our friendly neighborhood decal producers want to do decals for the #2/#98 Kelly Girl Monte Carlo, I did Kelly Girl lettering in that style (and a few others) for the Janet Guthrie decal sheet I did that was available for about 15 minutes about a dozen years ago. I'd be willing to lend said vector-based lettering to the cause if there's any interest.

I've always heard the Corinthian leather had some very impressive wind tunnel numbers. Always kept under wraps though. _________________ life is hard, it's harder when you're stupid. John Wayne |

Are you sure that the #8 is a Cordoba? The overall body shape, opera window configuration and front fascia details look more like a Monte Carlo to me.

That blurry of a photo with a fence smack in the middle makes it hard to tell. Ed did have a Cordoba in Cup a few times.....and the model he ran had the stacked headlights just like the Monte Carlo......be good if we found another photo. |

The narrower opera window and the "V" shape of the rear of the roof were the tipping points for me. Plus the Cordoba shared the same windshield and front side window/A-pillar shape as the '71-'74 B-bodies, which this car doesn't have.
If you look carefully, it appears to have the distinctive side body features of the Monte Carlo as well...
Just my observations, but I am open to being corrected if better evidence is presented... |

Cool pic, but I think they are different cars.
- Shaded #8 vs non-shaded.
- Rounded corners on the opera window vs narrower and sharp corners.
But... very close... I could be convinced otherwise... |

Same car as in body. Those cars were often painted weekly and local sign painters did the numbers etc. I still vote Cordoba...... |

The Cordoba, Monte Carlo and LTD II all looked very similar. Slacked headlights, grille size and finned front fenders...... |

Yes, but side (opera) window shape is very distinctive between the 3.
Cordoba:
Monte:
LTDII:
To me the differences are quite obvious, but are not the only differences in the photos from the previous posts. They literally jump out at me, like the "V" shape of the Monte Carlo's rear windshield vs the rounded one on the Cordoba.

Yeah, I know what you mean. To be truthful, I never much cared for them when they were new, though looking back there's a little nostalgia but I still will never like them as much as the sixties/early seventies styles. |

That Ferrel Harris car is a Monte. That was during the time when Stacy and Harry Hyde were engaged in lawsuits and both teams sometimes had to rent/borrow cars. I'm guessing Robert Gee/Jim Stacy rented a Monte Carlo then bought Ed's owner's points to ensure a starting spot after renting the car and making the long tow.
You can see the big pontoon body line on the rear quarter and I'm pretty sure the sponsor is a local Chevy dealer. |

wait, to get back to the monte body for a moment. i have not been following the releases by salvino too close. is this a second monte kit release? and if so was the first a 73-75? this box is advertised as a 78, i am a little confused so maybe tom mooty or dave van can clarify but i was under the impression that there was only two monte body styles. the 73- 75 with round head light bezels and the 76-78 with square. the 76-78 body was different also. the resin body sold by MCW was a 78 with square hl and the old resin by JNJ was a 74 with round hl and a different body accents and roof. i have both .

This is the second Monte Carlo kit they've done.
I think where your confusion comes in is this. During late 1976 Petty's Charger was going to be ineligible to race during the '77 season. NASCAR extended the 3 years for a body style rule to four years, so Richard could continue to campaign the Charger. This meant that a 1976 car such as Donnie's Monte, could run all the way to 1980. Manufacturers preferred the drivers use current model year on the big races, but on the shorter tracks they used older machinery because they knew it would get beat up. The 1978 was a downsized car and different from previous years.
